Ming Sen Shiue planned to kill Stauffers
UPDATE: The courtroom was cleared this morning and a civil commitment hearing halted because Shiue was coughing up blood, according to the Strib.
The revelation came yesterday during a hearing on whether convicted murderer, kidnapper, and rapist Ming Sen Shiue should be civilly committed or released.
Shiue made headlines 30 years ago when he kidnapped missionary Mary Stauffer and her 8-year-old daughter Beth and kept them locked in a closet for seven weeks. Shiue repeatedly raped Mary Stauffer, his former high school math teacher. The saga is the subject of a book by local author Eileen Biernat; City Pages published an excerpt in February.
Shiue is now before a judge in Anoka County Court who will determine if the felon should be civilly committed as a dangerous sex offender. If not, Shiue will be eligible for parole in July.
On Tuesday, Shiue's victims learned that when he kidnapped them, he intended to kill them, the Star Tribune is reporting:
While Shiue threatened the Stauffers with violence during those weeks, they were stunned to learn during Shiue's civil commitment trial Tuesday that he recently admitted to a psychologist that he had intended to kill them. They were able to escape before he had a chance.
