Michael Campion confronted William Jacobs in 1993

Back in January, former Minneapolis Park Police Capt. William Jacobs was charged with criminal sexual conduct after what a 15-year-old boy described to police as three years of escalating sexual assaults that included anal penetration and oral sex.

At the time, court documents said the Deephaven man have been sexually abusing children at different camps, some run by the YMCA, as long ago as the 1960s.

Over the weekend, the Star Tribune published an interview with Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion, who recalled confronting Jacobs in 1993 over sexual abuse allegations that dated to the 1960s.

Campion said Friday that he facilitated a meeting in 1993 between Jacobs and a man who alleged that Jacobs had abused him and his younger brother as youths in the 1960s. Campion said that when he interviewed the alleged victim, the man said he wanted to confront Jacobs but not press criminal charges.

Jacobs, who retired from the department in 2001, posted $500,000 bail Jan. 25.
