John T. Babcook is this morning's poster child for road rage, sitting in jail on a first-degree assault charge, after he ran down a fleeing 23-year-old Oakdale woman "like a dog" in the Hill-Murray School parking lot in Maplewood.

Cops say Babcoock, 21, was driving north on Century Boulevard when he cut off the 23-year-old woman. They argued, and then Babcock followed her north on Century and then west on Larpenteur.

But he didn't just follow her.

According to police, he rammed his car into her's.

When she turned into the Hill Murry parking lot, the Centerville man followed her and kept at it.

Finally, the woman got out of the car -- a crowd of dozens was building, she was yelling for someone to call 911 -- and was trying to flee on foot when Babcock ran her down from behind with enough force that her flipped over his car. She landed on the pavement, unconscious.

"He ran her down like an animal," a witness said in the criminal complaint quoted by the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press.

Then he took off, showing up a few hours later to surrender at the Washington County sheriff's office in Stillwater -- accompanied by a lawyer.

Babcook's in Ramsey County Jail this morning awaiting a court hearing. He's pleaded not guilty to charges worth a maximum 20 years behind bars.

His dad told the AP that his son's actions were out of character.

The woman was admitted to Regions Hospital. Her condition is not kown.
