Michael Frederick Schmidt was allegedly watching the girl April 24 along with his wife who is the baby's aunt. Schmidt has a history of convictions and charges of domestic abuse and child endangerment on his record.
According to the criminal complaint, the infant needed extensive surgery after the attack. His wife called the baby's parents that night claiming the baby just needed stitches. When she took the baby to the hospital, she was transferred to the St. Paul Children's Hospital for surgery to her vaginal and anal area.
When police questioned Schmidt about the girl's injuries, he blamed them on a hangnail. He claimed she started to roll off the couch when he was changing her diaper and when he tried to catch her, he "had a hangnail on one of his fingers that perhaps cut her." Those pesky hangnails.
We'll spare you the horrific details, but this injury was not from a hangnail. Read the full complaint here.
If convicted, Schmidt could face 30 years in prison.
