Sgt. Joe Bergeron's alleged killer pleads not guilty
Joshua M. Martin, charged with gunning down Maplewood police Sgt. Joseph Bergeron earlier this month after a carjacking gone bad, has pleaded not guilty in Ramsey County District Court.

Martin, 21, was on supervised prison release when he and another guy named Jason John Jones, 21, set off a massive manhunt with an early-morning carjacking at a gas station near Larpenteur Avenue at I-35E.
Bergeron was getting out his squad car on Bruce Vento Trail near Arlingon in the Lake Phalen area to speak to the two suspects when one of them stepped forward and gunned him down.
Later in the day, Jones was shot dead by St. Paul officer David Longbehn during a brawl.
Martin was later tracked to a home on Duluth Street, where he was arrested. He was formally charged with second-degree intentional murder in Bergeron's death, and with kidnapping for his role in the carjacking. It's not clear right now whether it was Martin or Jones who pulled the trigger in Bergeron's death.
