Ernest Woodrow Breland apparently thought his long-lost son was back in his life for good. When the kid didn't want to be close, the dad couldn't handle it.

Breland, 43, hadn't seen his son for 21 years. Apparently, he took it hard when 21-year-old Xavier D. Max cut ties after getting to know him. That's when the elder Breland started making threatening calls. On May 25, the father assaulted his son, with the help of two of his kid's--Max's half-siblings--Ernest Xavier Breland, 18, and Ashley L. Davis, 21.

Here's the Star Tribune's account of what happened in the 1300 block of Westminster Street in St. Paul:

On May 25, the charges said, Max had just returned home when his father and half-siblings pulled into the parking lot and blocked him in. Ernest W. Breland began pulling on Max's driver's side door. Max grabbed a can of chemical irritant, but Breland grabbed it and sprayed Max in the face. Max tried to call 911, but Breland grabbed the phone.

When Breland broke the driver's side window, Max escaped out the passenger side. The three assailants caught him, threw him to the ground and kicked him. They fled in Breland's car when Max's neighbor came out of the building, the charges said.

Max may be young, but we have to say, he's a sharp one. Long lost family or not, with a dad and siblings like that, who needs 'em?

The elder Breland is charged with gross misdemeanor domestic assault and misdemeanor damage to property.
