Helen Thomas tells Jews to go back to Germany and Michele Bachmann pounces

Helen Thomas, who started reporting on U.S. presidents a year before Barack Obama was born, got caught on tape recently during the Jewish Heritage Celebration at the White House telling Jews to go back to Germany (video after the jump).

Reliably, Michele Bachmann took Thomas's inane comments as an opportunity to lambaste the mainstream media she so loathes:

Once again the liberal media has shown its true colors! The White House media dinosaur, also known as Helen Thomas has called on Jews to leave Israel and move back to Poland and Germany. This anti-Semitic sentiment has no place in our public discourse. I call upon her employer, Heart Corporation to dismiss her at once! The White House needs to revoke her press credentials immediately. Her apology is not sufficient, considering her many previous negative sentiments against Israel. Her language is offensive, vulgar and intolerant.

Just a note on "the liberal media" showing its true colors: Thomas's employer, Hearst, says the 89-year-old columnist has "retired." The White House Correspondents Association called her comments indefensible, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs slammed her words as "offensive and reprehensible," and Nine Speakers, the company the represents Thomas, has dropped Thomas as a client.

It's also worth mentioning that Thomas was perfectly at ease calling bullshit on former President George W. Bush over the (yes, we're still fighting a) war in Iraq, something the mainstream media was loathe to do, and that earned her scorn from the right.

From that, we move to Thomas waxing antisemitic, setting herself up as a target for Bachmann:

Thomas herself issued this apology on her website:

"I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon."
