Minerva Lopez will spend 20 years behind bars
Minerva Lopez told police she beat her teenage daughter with a broomstick, a metal rod and a frying pan, scalded her with hot water, choked her, cut her wrist with a kitchen knife and bit her face.

Now the 33-year-old Madison woman is going to prison for 20 years, after sentencing yesterday in a Wisconsin court.

Her husband, Porfirio Olivas, was convicted in December on 21 counts of child abuse related to the months-long torture of the girl. He was sentenced in March to 20 years in prison.

Back in December, the girl testified that her father forced her to eat cockroaches and a dead mouse. He denied the accusation.

The teenager was rescued from the abuse in 2008 when social workers, concerned that she was missing school, found her lying in a closet in her home, surrounded by her own excrement, emaciated, bloodied, bruised and with a broken kneecap. They thought she was dead.

All five of the couple's children are now in foster care.
