Minneapolis ranks No. 1 for cheap housing

Categories: Lists

We love our place on lists, and a new one just out today ranks Minneapolis No. 1 for great housing prices. Everybody go out and buy a house!

Minneapolis is first on Trulia's Rent v. Buy index, meaning that the cost of buying compared to the cost of renting is a darn good bargain. Trulia compares the average listing price of a home with the average monthly rent for two-bedroom condos, townhomes, or apartments on their own Web site, and our fair city sits atop the list. Trulia compared the nation's 50 most populous cities.

Here are the top ten cheap house-buying-v.-renting cities:

1. Minneapolis, Minnesota
2. Arlington, Texas
3. Miami, Florida
4. Fresno, California
5. San Antonio, Texas
6. Mesa, Arizona
7. Jacksonville, Florida
8. Phoenix, Arizona
9. El Paso, Texas
10. Las Vegas, Nevada

And here are the most expensive places to buy, compared to the cost of renting:

1. New York, New York
2. Omaha, Nebraska
3. Seattle, Washington
4. Portland, Oregon
5. San Francisco, California
6. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
7. Kansas City, Missouri
8. San Diego, California
9. Cleveland, Ohio
10. Dallas, Texas
