St. Paul attorney Jeff Anderson can sue the Vatican on behalf of sex-abuse victims after a ruling Monday by the U.S. Supreme Court turned back a challenge by the Catholic Church that said it was immune from U.S. lawsuits.

"Today's action by the Justices is an answer to the prayers of literally thousands of survivors of sexual abuse who finally have a real shot at obtaining justice, and the truth, about the complicity of Vatican leaders in covering up the criminal acts of Catholic priests against innocent children," Anderson said in a statement.

The case began when Anderson filed a 2002 lawsuit in Oregon alleging the church moved a priest, the Rev. Andrew Roman, from Ireland to Chicago to Portland, while knowing he'd abused seminarians and minors.

The Vatican has claimed sovereign immunity from the suit and sought dismissal first in district court, and then with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Anderson has stated that his ultimate goal is to have Pope Benedict testify under oath.

Recently, he filed suit against St. John's Preparatory School, the abbey, the Order of St. Benedict and Father Raymond Francisco Schulte, a former teacher and minister at the school. Anderson says Schulte recruited and sexually abused two boys, one from North Carolina, one from Minnesota, before and while they were students at the school in the mid-1980s. The lawsuit names Father Raymond Francisco Schulte as the abuser, and says he is currently an active Benedictine monk in Rome, giving tours.

Sounds as if this Mr. Anderson makes a living off of suing the Church.

To "Just what the fuck is that supposed to mean, asshole"

There are mysteries great and small in this world and one of the smallest relates to that vestigial appendage that rides like a pale cranberry atop the tiny husk of your scrotum, i.e., how could God ever intend that to please either man or woman? I realize contemplating this inconvenient mystery might have fouled your spirits a little today. But instead of trying desperately to sound like more of a man than you are, embrace your condition, forgive the world, continue to seek solace through masturbation. Good luck to you, my sick friend.

Anyway, I don't argue with those who are incapable of intelligent discourse.

I do, however, pray for them that God will open their eyes to how they are acting and how they are not being "open minded" nor "loving".

You are no exception.

It is getting funny when those who are trying to insult others by taking saint's names cannot even spell them correctly! LOL

Well just look at yet another example of "open mindedness" and "rational thought" and even "love for all, regardless".

Mr. Catholic Lawyer (haw haw haw), you are providing the perfect example of why your movement is dying out and the rest of the world is moving on.

Insults, hatred, and bigotry are your only defenses. It didn't work so well for the Nazis or the Klan, and it won't work for you either.

Seek help. We will pray for you.

Jesus Tittyfucking Christ, who linked the Fred Phelps people to the City Pages today? And how do you dumdums think this lawyer is going to get rich in this lawsuit? I kind of doubt a bunch of blind kids in Wisconsin put together a huge retainer.

We had randy old Popes back in the middle ages with multiple wives and children.

And we survived.

It is not the members that make or break the Church. We are sinful and broken just like everyone else. But the Church is the Body of Christ, and She can never be destroyed by the actions of a very few poor members of Her flock.

Axel,

You seem to forget history. We've had far worse in our 2010 years of existence and you know what happened? We continued to grow and strengthen. The same is true now. Especially when you consider that these cases are mostly a half-century old.

The Church is fine. Not even Hell can conquer Her. In fact, this is not even a blip on the radar, as it already has been corrected.

Your children are far safer in the Church than they are with Jeff Anderson.

"Sad that the agendas of abortion and homosexuality have called for the destruction of Holy Mother Church. Remember whose side God is on, folks..."A little confused, are we? Isn't it the Roman Catholic homosexuals who have committed the mortal sins in these cases? Are you saying God is on the side of the pedophiles? The church is collapsing under the weight of its own sins.

As reprehensible as the actions of predator priests, as ignorant, inept, or criminal the church officials charged with oversight responsibility for these miscreants, I still can't cheer Jeff Andersen. He represents something pernicious in a different way. He contributes massive sums to politicians (more than $100,000 over the past few years to Congressional representatives and party (Democratic) committees) to ensure the laws on the books tilt his way. The liberties he takes with facts are many and obvious. He claims his interest in these cases is not driven by money, but his web site suggests there are no other child abuse cases that concern him, at least none that involve defendants without deep pockets.

He enjoys his work and appears good at what he does. The steam rising from the piles he leaves on journalist desks after winning multi-million dollar settlements suggests his degree in mass communications is serving him well. Having admitted to serially cheating on two wives, he also knows a thing or two about violating vows of continence and the pain that can cause children.

But for the rest of us, what joy can there be in knowing that 30% to 40% of settlement dollars derived at least in part from church collection baskets no longer goes to inner-city schools and health care programs serving communities in need that are not solely or even predominantly Catholic? These lean-managed school systems are often the only alternative to our cities' long-failing public schools. How do we celebrate rechanneling those dollars to pay club dues or make tuition payments at the suburban prep schools and ivy league institutions that serve the scions of wealthy lawyers like Jeff and his law-maker friends in DC?

Jeff's a circus barker, but a dangerous one, who doesn't mind at all if his show happens to destroy real lives of the kind he purports to care so much about.

God Bless the Holy Father, and the Body of Christ that is the Catholic Church.

We fear nothing, especially not attorneys. As history has clearly shown, you can beat us, spit on us, tie us up, cut us up, hang us, burn us, and feed us to animals.

We still win, because the victory was won 2010 years ago.

I do not fear losing money to greedy lawyers anymore than I fear the sword or the machine gun. With God, who can be against us?

There is absolutely no chance of a victory for Anderson, and even less of a chance for him to depose the Pope.

The Pope is not subject to U.S. laws.

Also, you can empty the Church's coffers, take its buildings, even kill its clergy, and we'll simply rebuild and become stronger.

Not even the Gates of Hell can prevail over us. We've already won.

Misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis vestris, perducat vos ad vitam aeternam.

That prayer is for both those who seek the destruction of the Holy Catholic Church and for those bad priests who have poisoned the reputation of the Holy Priesthood by their vices.

St. Michael the Archangel, first champion of the Kingship of Christ, pray for us!

This has nothing to do with justice. It's about a lawyer getting richer at the further expense of victims.

This will come back to bite the US in the long run.

Let the Vatican finally pay! Those bastards have avoided any repercussions for far too long.

Congratulations to Jeff Anderson and his client. Another hurdle has been successfully negotiated! I can't wait to read the deposition of the man (Benedict XVI) who has known about and covered up clergy sexual abuse for decades.

Scrpture says, And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. After the recent attack on the Church by the U.S. media the earth opened in an area of the Gulf called the Tiber. The Vatican is also referred to as crossing the tiber. The seculars are trying to poison the waters of Christianity via this attack. Amazing that the Pelican is also a symbol of the Eucharist in Catholicism. Seems like the U.S., who is leading this outrageous attack, is reaping what it has sowed. Sad that the agendas of abortion and homosexuality have called for the destruction of Holy Mother Church. Remember whose side God is on, folks...
