Tom Emmer supports English-only in Lino Lakes

• Less than 1% of Lino Lakes can not speak English. A number I would believe is close to every city in the US. 6809 known languages in the world. Trying to accommodate other cultures is impossible and serves only to hinder the English learning capabilities of anyone new to this country. Prior to this point in our history, every person in it learned English. How can anyone argue it is in the best interests of this country or to immigrants to print anything but English.

• We are one of only a handful of industrialized nations that does not have an official language. Requiring residents to learn just a basic amount of English is not racist. It would make adjusting to life in the US much easier for them, and much cheaper for the taxpayers. Yes, printing every single thing you need to print two or three times to accommodate other languages DOES add up. I work in the printing industry, so it's more than just an abstract concept for me, whereas most of my liberal cohorts would probably see it differently.

• While I agree that producing government materials in several languages (most of which most likely are not spoken in Lino Lakes) easily could be an added and sometimes uneeded cost. I fear the precident it sets. So under this logic if a large enough portion of the populos of a geographical area say speaks spanish, could that not lead to spanish being chosen as a "official" language of a municipality?
