Wilkes' body was found near the lock and dam in Minneapolis
Thirty-five-year-old Katharine Wilkes has been identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner as the woman whose body was found in the Mississippi River on Monday in Minneapolis.

She is the step-sister of U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Katharine's mother, Susan Cornell Wilkes, is married to Jim Klobuchar, Amy Klobuchar's father. The exact cause of her death hasn't been made public.

Her body was discovered by a lock-and-dam worker, but identifying her proved a bit of a challenge; some unique tattoos may have helped.

Fox 9 reported that Wilkes was an actress, painter and interior design student, and that she may have gone swimming about 10 days ago.

Wilkes said Katharine struggled with bipolar disorder and occasionally went off her medication, but she doesn't believe her daughter was suicidal and doesn't believe the death was a suicide.

Klobuchar has been tied up all week in Washington, taking part in the confirmation hearings for Supre Court justice nominee Elena Kagan. Her spokeswoman told reporters that Klobuchar would be back in Minnesota on Friday to be with her father and his wife.
