Updated: Minneapolis police told the Star Tribune late Monday that a bouncer at Grumpy's Bar and Grill shot Tirso Cruz Gomez dead early Sunday morning after Gomez came at the bouncer with a knife.

The Hennepin County Medical examiner identified 24-year-old Gomez as the man police found dead on the sidewalk outside the popular hangout in the 2200 block of 4th St. NE.

He'd been shot in the second of two homicides over the weekend. Earlier, one man was found dead and two others wounded, one critically, in a home on the 3800 block of Thomas Avenue North.

An investigation is continuing but police spokesman Sgt. Bill Palmer said Monday afternoon that the shooter was defending himself and had a conceal-and-carry permit for his weapon.

An earlier report in the Pioneer Press today suggested that Gomez might have been refused service at Grumpy's.

Marna Gomez pleaded with her son not to leave their Columbia Heights home and return to a Northeast Minneapolis bar that earlier had refused to serve him.

Tirso Gomez Jr. left anyway, and early Sunday the 24-year-old was shot dead outside Grumpy's Bar and Grill, his mother said.

"I just asked him to please don't go," his mother said. "I screamed down the street, 'Don't go!' "

A woman who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting said she saw a bouncer tell police he was the shooter.

The two weekend deaths are the 27th and 28th homicides in the city this year. Here are the others:
