Young led all of baseball with a monster .434 average in July.
Here's the second sentence from my "June Twin of the Month" article: "While left fielder Delmon Young's surging June earned him a deserved opportunity to get tabbed for the All-Star game, the 'stache power of [Carl] Pavano earns my top nod for the June Twin of the Month."  So perhaps it's fitting the second sentence in this entry offers something of the inverse: While Pavano won four games for the second straight month (including back-to-back complete game victories), the smoldering bat of Young set the Twins (and all of baseball) afire.

Delmon Damarcus Young isn't merely our "July Twin of the Month."  The guy has become a legit top-10 MVP contender in the American League after having one of the finest months for a Minnesota sportsman in recent memory.  Building on a summer sizzle that saw him hit .320 with 24 RBI in June, Young's July represented the finest month of 24-year-old's career.

Carrying the club to a 15-11 July and their season-high seven game (now eight) win streak to close out the month, Young led all of baseball in July with a crazy .434 average and 46 hits. His previous career monthly highs in said categories charted at .343 at 36, respectively.  For his 26 games in the month, Young recorded a hit in 23 of those contests and reached base via hit or walk in 24.  After beginning July with a nine game hit streak (dating to June 30), Delmon concluded the calendar with hits in 10 straight.   That stretch went to 11 with his 1-for-3 line in the Twins' 4-0 win over Seattle on Sunday.

In addition: the left fielder charted in MLB's July top-10 for doubles (tied for first with 12), RBI (second behind A-Roid, with 30), On Base Percentage (6th at .455) and Slugging (third with .736).

Further kudos for baseball hottest bunch can also be directed at our "April Twin of the Month" Michael Cuddyer, who continues to attack his first base assignment with aplomb.  Founded by a career-best 15-game hit streak of his own to conclude the month (including hits in 19 of 20 games between July 8th-31st), Cuddy clipped at a .317 average for July and played the position sans error in Justin Morneau's stead.

It's been well bandied about in recent weeks that the Twins' stretch of success has been a

product of cupcake competition.  A stouter form of opposition segues into August with the team's four-game set in tough Tampa beginning tonight.  As a gauge of their standing amidst the league's best and Delmon's former club, the Boys will undoubtedly need continued production from Young (et. all) to proceed with their mid-summer strut.

His surname won't alter, but in 2010 Delmon Young is becoming a man before our collectively shaking heads and alit eyes.  In recognition of his award, Mr. Young will receive a fresh dome Bic'ing, compliments of City Pages' web editor, Ms. Jen Boyles.
