The mother of Minnesota's first female senator died yesterday after complications from heart surgery. Rose Klobuchar was a long-time teacher in the Minneapolis and Wayzata school districts; she retired from teaching second grade at age 70. She was also a Camp Fire Girls leader and had once won a teacher of the year award in Wayzata.

Rose Katherine Heuberger was born to Swiss immigrants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She married to long-time Star Tribune columnist Jim Klobuchar in 1954; and the pair had two daughters, Meagan and Amy, before getting divorced.

"My mom was an inspiration not just to our family but to all those she touched," Sen. Amy Klobuchar said in a statement released yesterday.
