15-foot sinkhole swallows St. Paul man

Just ask the unfortunate soul who plunged 15 feet under a sidewalk this morning near 6th and Wabasha streets in St. Paul.
Downtown St. Paul's sinkhole doesn't sound quite as bad as the 20-footer in Milwaukee earlier this summer that swallowed a Cadillac Escalade, but it might be a good idea to watch your step if you happen to be in the area.
Authorities believe an underground water main broke, pouring out water that eroded a substantial hole underneath the sidewalk.
A man not yet identified stepped on the sidewalk over the hole at about 9:15 a.m. today, sending him underground. The man sustained head injuries, reports the Star Tribune, but he'll live. Still, he was brought the Regions Hospital for an evaluation.
If you're going to be driving past 6th and Wabasha in the near future, don't plan on getting anywhere fast; traffic is blocked off in every direction. From the sounds of things, it's for good reason. Right now the sinkhole hole is about 5-6 feet wide, but officials say it could still be growing.
