The flu virus: It looks pretty, but it can make your life a misery.
Somewhere out there in the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area, a new strain of flu is gaining a foothold in a long-term care facility.

Three residents there tested positive for influenza A/H3 by the Department of Health Public Health Laboratory.

This particular strain of the virus has been showing up around the country over the summer, and with official flu season starting on Oct. 1, MDH is using the report of its presence in the nursing home as a way to remind folks that it's time to get vaccinated.

In case you missed it, the Centers for Disease Control declared last year's H1N1 pandemic officially a done deal back in June. Between April 2009 and April 2010, CDC estimates the virus killed between 8,870 and 18,300 people worldwide.

A/H3 is not the same thing as the more virulent H1N1, but get those vaccinations as soon as possible anyway, because they will provide protection through the full influenza season.
