Minneapolis police are crediting their shot-spotter camera system for leading them to two men suspected in the homicide of Christopher DeRonde.

One of the high-tech cameras was installed four years ago, near the site of the Sept. 17 shooting at the corner of North 30th Avenue and North Colfax Avenue.

It flipped on when the shots rang out and recorded video of a Dodge Intrepid that led police Michael James Funches and Christopher James Hayes. They were arrested yesterday.

DeRonde's murder stood out because it happened in broad daylight on a residential street, and because it came just a day after Mayor R.T. Rybak presided over a neighborhood safety award gathering just a few blocks away.
