A commuter train running at 80 mph hit and killed a railroad worker in Coon Rapids this morning.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office says the 54-year-old Fridley man was testing the rails near the intersection with Egret Boulevard this morning.

The stretch of track is a no-whistle zone because it runs through a residential neighborhood, and the rail worker was on his cell phone when he stepped out from behind some cars and onto the tracks. The Sheriff's Office believes he never heard the train coming.

The train was stopped and commuters were transferred to more than a dozen buses to continue their trip into the city.
