Beating someone up in plain view of surveillance cameras isn't a good idea either.
Beating the crap out someone simply for being a good Samaritan does not look good in front of a judge.

It definitely did not help Abdiaziz Hirsi. A judge sentenced Hirsi to 3 1/2 years in prison yesterday -- twice the standard sentence -- for participating in the group beatdown of Edwin Daniel earlier this year at a Super America in St. Paul.

In May, Daniel encountered a group of people harassing a female clerk at the Super America during his route as an overnight driver. Being a man of chivalry, Daniel kicked the guys out of the gas station.

A few days later, Daniel came back to the same gas station to find Hirsi and three others waiting for him, armed with blunt instruments.

"There was not a lot of exchange of words or discussion," said St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Schnell after the incident.

Daniel barely escaped the beating with his life.

Hirsi later pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Given the nature of the crime, a judge thought Hirsi needed a little longer than most to think about what he had done.
