Michele Bachmann skewered in musical 'Bachumanntary'

Another fine addition to the local theater scene.
We in the Twin Cities like to trumpet our national standing as a respected leader in the performing arts.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann likes to promote herself as a constitutional scholar and teabagger-in-chief.

So it makes total cosmic sense that the most polarizing figure in Minnesota politics is now the subject of a scathing musical satire called "Michele! The Musical Bachumanntary" at the Minneapolis Theater Garage.

Created from the fertile minds of a passel of local folks involved with the Guthrie Theater, the St Paul Arts Magnet Public School, the Plymouth Playhouse and Brave New Workshop and other venues, it's running until the end of the month.

The plot sets up a behind-the-scenes look at a fake musical about the congresswoman that opens the night she was first elected to Congress in 2006, and follows her through Election Day 2010. It's proudly "Unfair. Unbalanced. Unauthorized."

"Wicked" it's not. Reviews have been middling. But if you're deciding whether or not to see political satire aimed at a truly comic personality based on what an oh-so-serious critic has to say, you may be missing the point anyway.

Laura Adams stars in the title role. Advance tickets are $25-$30 and available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/128879 or by calling 1-800-838-3006.
