Two men paid a steep price for talking to the wrong women early this morning in Dinkytown.

Around 4 a.m., two men -- at least one of them a University of Minnesota student -- struck up a conversation with some women near the corner of 13th Avenue and 4th Street SE, right in front of the Purple Onion restaurant, says Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer.

A group of four men nearby apparently didn't approve.

"Some guys came along and said 'Those girls are with us,' and beat them up," says Palmer.

Seeing the two men on the wrong side of an unfair fight, a witness jumped in and tried to detain at least one of the suspects, says Palmer. The suspect then tried to duck into the Purple Onion. Given it was 4: 00 a.m., the restaurant was closed, so the four men fled the scene before police arrived.

One of the victims seems to have taken the brunt of the beating. He was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.

"They were trying to stabilize him as of the time of the report," says Palmer.
