Eighty cars have been broken into since the beginning of November, according to Minneapolis police. That's right--80 cars, damaged and/or vandalized in 11 days.
The break-ins have mostly happened near the University of Minnesota, as
well as in the adjacent Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, according to the
cops.
The thieves aren't stealing the cars, just their contents: laptops, iPods, GPS units--even loose change. The crimes seem to be happening between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.
Police say you should follow these simple steps to avoid being a victim:
- Lock your car
- Take everything valuable out of it
- If you must leave something inside your car, hide it in your trunk before you park
- Park in a well-lit area
- Even better, park in your garage
