Kye Allums is first transgendered Division 1 basketball player
Kye Allums, formerly known to his teammates as Kiara, has become the first transgendered person to play Division 1 basketball. He is originally from Hugo, and played girl's basketball at both Highland and Centennial.

Allums was hit by a media storm this week after GW announced on their website that he would continue to play women's basketball, but start identifying as a man.
"I am trying to help myself and others to be who they are," Allums wrote in her statement. "My teammates have embraced me as the big brother of the team."
The 5-foot-11 guard decided to change his name to Kyler and be referred to as "he" rather than "she." In accordance with NCAA rules, Allums is not undergoing any surgery or hormonal treatments, and so can continue playing women's sports.
The coach is cool with it, the players are cool with it -- it seems to be a pretty amicable decision all around, as opposed to another Caster Semenya debacle.
While this is pretty cool news, we do pity the poor game announcer who will probably embarrass himself more than a few times in honoring Allums's wishes.
