David Milz never saw it coming
We like to keep track of all the true weirdness in Wisconsin, but the Burlington Liar's Club has the market cornered on fibs.

This year, its judges had to comb through lies submitted by more than 500 entrants to name its annual World Champion Liar.

Their pick is David Milz, of Bristol, Wis., for this tongue-in-cheek quip:

"I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met."

Runner-up Ellen Everts of New London offered this:

"My luck is so bad that if I bought a cemetery, people would stop dying.

Lies? More like Rodney Dangerfield outtakes. And that's the point. The liars' club is really just an informal way to pass along a good joke.

Burlington prankster Otis Hulett founded the club more than 80 years ago as a way to pass the time during the town's long, dark winters about 35 miles outside of Milwaukee. Its first champion was the local police chief:

Judges met at the police station on January 1, 1930, and were just about to award the championship to another man, when one of them asked the Chief if he did not want to compete.

"Me?" replied the Chief, in an injured voice. "Me? Why I never told a lie in my life." And by unanimous consent, the judges, who had known him for years, awarded Chief Beller the medal.

Word of the club spread -- membership costs you a dollar -- and now anyone in the country can submit an entry.

Honestly.
