Chris Kluwe tweets worries about frozen TCF Bank Stadium
Vikings punter Chris Kluwe appreciates the hard work everyone's done to try and get TCF Bank Stadium ready for tonight's Vikings-Bears game. Really, he does.
Chris Kluwe over shares on Twitter.
But even so, he took to Twitter yesterday after practice to complain about the "trainwreck" of a frozen field being hard as concrete, unplayable, and liable to produce a concussion.
There's no doubt this is going to be a tough game. It will be the first time the Vikings have played outside at home in 29 years. The forecast calls for snow, wind and temps in the 20s. And Joe Webb is scheduled to make his first start at quarterback.
On top of all that, Kluwe's post-practice smack was not exactly what his teammates wanted to hear, and he was asked to put down the keyboard.
Serious time - All respect to the people that cleared the field and got it ready, you did an amazing job. That being said, it's unplayable.
That was followed by this series of tweets:
The field is as hard as concrete an hour and a half after they took the tarp off, and anyone that hits their head is getting a concussion.I find it interesting that the NFL can claim an emphasis on player safety, and then tell us the field is fine. It's beyond hypocritical.
I can only hope, however unlikely, that no one gets catastrophically injured at the trainwreck that's about to take place tomorrow night.
To everyone - that was a totally serious post on the field conditions. It is like walking on concrete. They took the tarp off at the same...
...time they'll take it off before the game. The problem isn't heating it, it's retaining that heat.
The problem, the team told him, was that he was running his mouth.
I've been asked not to tweet anymore about the field so as not to distract teammates (who were there) and I will honor that. Time for WoW.
Even the New York Times took notice of Kluwe's consternation:
A return to the Vikings' arctic roots, which defined the team's first two decades, had older fans and retired players pulling out parkas and waxing nostalgic, while some younger players and fans bemoaned the loss of the Dome's warm shelter in the face of yet another snowstorm.More griping than grunting came from the Vikings. "The field is hard as concrete," punter Chris Kluwe wrote Sunday on Twitter, adding, "Anyone that hits their head is getting a concussion."
