Karen Himle resigns from U of M

Himle says her departure is due to appointment of a new president.

Himle was under the microscope this fall for her part in canceling the Troubled Waters documentary, which was supposed to run at the U of M's Bell Museum. After public outcry, the college reversed its decision and premiered the movie.

Internal e-mails released to reporters illustrated contrasting opinions between Himle and U of M President Bob Bruininks on how to handle the media fiasco. From one of those e-mails:

"I met with President Bruninks and Kathy Brown for almost three hours this morning. It was apparent at the beginning that he did not understand the totality of the problem. He simply wanted to issue a statement and "put this behind us." I must tell you I almost walked away then."

Himle issued an apology on Oct. 15 for her part in canceling the movie.

This morning, Bruininks said Himle's resignation was related to the arrival of Eric Kaler, who will take over as college president next summer, according to the Star Tribune.
