Minneapolis violent crime rates drop: Comment of the day

Robbery, aggravated assault, and rape are all on the decline in Minneapolis. Close to numbers from the mid-1960s, in fact, according to new stats releases by the MPD that we mentioned yesterday.

And even though murders doubled in 2010 compared to 2009, the past three years had the lowest number of homicides in 25 years.

Which means we are not Murderopolis, says commenter "Anthony Ross."

Mike from precinct 4 nails it. I can't tell you how many times I had to explain to suburbanite friends that MPLS is damn safe. The gang wars over the summer were THE cause of the homicide rate and almost wholly anomalous.

Add to that the current recession, encouraging second hand purchasing a la craigslist and bartering, thus strengthening neighborhood bonds.
