Chrissie Bates's cause of death: complex homicidal violence

Categories: Homicide Files

Chrissie Bates died Monday in Minneapolis as a result of "complex homicidal violence," according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office. She was 45.

The Medical Examiner released the victim's name as Christopher Paul Bates and determined him to be a white male. The report did not include an exact date of birth.

Bates was identified by police as a man when they came to her apartment at 1302 Linden Ave. on Monday, but she was living as a woman and went by the name Chrissie.

"Complex homicidal violence generally means just that --not a single type of injury," says Dallas Drake, principal research at Center for Homicide Research. "There may be multiple types of injury. If there's a wound, it's not a single wound. It's a series of wounds or a series of types of wounds."

"We see in GLBT homicide, it's common to see overkill. Overkill is excessive wounding, more injury than what is necessary to cause the death. Or second, multiple types of wounds."

"When you see overkill it typically points toward an intimate partner killing. It does not mean that it's a long-term partner. It means that it's a sexual or intimate partner."

OutFront Minnesota is planning a vigil for Chrissie on Jan. 21, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The location of the vigil has not yet been decided. The vigil will include a brief march, speakers, and a time for community members to speak.

"The goals of it are to honor her life and reclaim some space--community solidarity," said Rebecca Waggoner, anti-violence program director for OutFront. "There's no place in Minneapolis--or anywhere--for this kind of violence. It should be both a celebration and taking back our communities."

Her name was Krissy Bates's not Chrisse or Christopher... What if it was you or your loved one that was killed in a somewhat embarrassing fashion and then the press kept rubbing it in and not correcting it? This is not reporting, it's cisgender hate for transsexual people.

The media is insensitive scum.. plain and simple. Who cares what the coroners or medical examiner releases? What does that have to do with anything? Heck, why not allow them to double as reporters? They're basically telling you what to report or are you so gullible to report any/everything they release?

The fact that, she was Transgender should suffice. Evidently she went by another name for a reason, yes? If she desired everyone to know of any other names, don't you imagine she might had included that herself?

Leaving anyone with any dignity is out of the question, should it stand in the way of "a good story." "Sticking to the facts respectfully?" Respectfully for whom?

Go away!

Sad and most moving. Disheartening the fact that reporters cannot resist telling every little morsel they find out. Leaving anyone with an ounce of dignity is surely not under their job description.

Insensitive media scum-trash.

Because police officers are so good at Medicine and they can tell what gender a person is better than that person herself. It's not important to the news story how the person lived or identified, but the untrained opinion of some near-random man, that was pertinent. You see, transgender people are like Schrödinger's Cat, their gender is a standing probability wave until that wave is collapsed via the observation of a qualified observer, meaning a man. Preferably a professional man, with a degree (in SCIENCE), but really any random man on the street will do. This is lazy reporting. This person has family, and probably knows more people than her similarly-named neighbor. But instead of extending your phone-dialing finger and doing some actual news reporting work, you just rewrote the police report. Lazy crappy reporting, no wonder the news industry is moribund.

The only part of this relevant to this story is that the police came to her apartment on Monday. I hope this will be changed to be more respectful.

This and the earlier article I thought did a fine job using Ms. Bates' chosen name. Her previous gender/sex were only reference by the neighbor in the previous article and by the Examiner in this one.

Aside from questions of (important) rhetoric, I'm saddened for those close to the victim and others who may not feel safe in their homes and communities.

Jen - Upon closer inspection I see now that Chrissie was only referred to as Chris in one paragraph as stated by the Medical Examiner, but then going forward was referred to as Chrissie. Glad to see this and thanks for commenting.

Heidi, Tara: At the end of the day, we are journalists and report details in a fair and accurate manner. This is what was done here. The medical examiner released her former name as well, by which I'm sure some people knew her. We are not reporting on the victim maliciously or sensationally but rather sticking to facts respectfully. If you would like to further address this, you may email a letter to the editor. letters@citypages.com Thanks for your opinion. -Jen

Please stop posting Chrisse Bates's assigned name (Christopher). If you can't write about trans people without making a mistake of this magnitude, don't write about us at all.

@Coletta Hughes So, a total of EIGHT in the entire country in an entire year?! How many straight people were murdered in the same time period?

@Coletta Hughes In the case of death, your name is your legal name. Had she wished to change it, that option was available.

@Jo-Jo A violent death puts an end to secrets, for everyone. No one here or in the media is making sport of either her death or her life. She is who she was, as are we all. Why do you deny people their pathos? That, also, is part of their story. Her story.

Do you not count it a positive thing that people now know her? They will each make of it and her what they will. So be it; that's on them

jack_sprat

@Margo You cannot take away the dignity of a dead person, only the lies which they and others told, each for their own reasons. She is not diminished by her truth, nor by her lies. Together, they are her.

Does anyone love her less now for either her truth or her lies? G_d help them if they do, for it's themselves whom they diminish.

This doesn't alter the fact that such truths and lies sometimes hurt the survivors, I know. For their sakes, I would hope that people would censor themselves, when appropriate. (Sometimes, too, that's a tough call to make. Life works that way.)

My sentiment excatly. When a cis person dies do we bother to mention what gender the police have identified them with?

jack_sprat
jack_sprat

@Heidi It wasn't merely her assigned name. She could have changed it, but chose not to do so. Maintaining pretense is nowhere among the job description of a reporter. Indeed, it's mostly antithetical to the performance of their job.

Here's the story, make of it what you will.

You might be surprised to know that such stories changed MY mind about your community. In spite of the insistence of so many who, like you, insist on taking offense and calling down the heavens over trifles.

How in blazes do you imagine that people will accept you who know nothing of your stories? Join the passing parade, instead of constructing a hagiography of modern sainthood. Contrary to the stage play, "thou" aren't Angels. but people. You, too, are frail and strong, have hopes and dreams and disappointments, sin and are sinned against. Who are you? Here, in this article, is one.

@Tj123411 Ultimately, rage often has its home in past betrayals and present loneliness. In a world full of the walking wounded, a lot of people will go off. It's a numbers game.

That's why stories like that of Suzy Favor Hamilton so dishearten me. Every child, every spouse is once again put on notice that this is a time in which quicksand threatens to devour each of us.

So much for the pursuit of "self". Narcissism has its tolls.

Each of us is the Captain of our Ship. Tell me, do you act mindfully of the fates of your Passengers? Or, do you act willfully, as Suzy did, leaving them to the chance of tide, sharks, and passing ships?

@friday_freakin_jones In that, they are consistent, at least. That is, alas, pretty much the last best source of page views.

Let's break this down.

"The Medical Examiner released the victim's name as Christopher Paul Bates and determined him to be a white male. The report did not include an exact date of birth."

So the medical examiner /released/ the victim's name, but /determines/ her gender? Was her gender not released the same as her name? And for that matter, why is "determination" the verb here? The medical examiner is an authority figure, and this suggests that Ms. Bates self-determined gender has been superseded or invalidated. A more sensitive way to phrase this might have been "The medical examiner released the victim's legal name as Christopher Bates, and her legal gender as male."

Note, as well, that despite the Medical Examiner's gendering, this sentence still respects Chrissie Bates gender by attributing the proper pronouns. The original sentence referred to her as "him," (despite the rest of the article's usage of female pronouns.) It may sound awkward to say something like "She was legally male," but it is appropriate. In fact, more than a few major news organizations' style guides use this approach: http://www.glaad.org/page.aspx...
