Dangerously cold.
It's cold: 14 degrees below zero at 7 a.m. in Minneapolis, according to the National Weather Service. That was frigid enough for Minneapolis Public Schools to notify parents that all absences are automatically excused for the day.

It's even colder in the suburbs: Minus 19 in Crystal, minus 27 in Lake Elmo, and minus 29 in Lakeville. And schools all over the region are either on a delayed opening schedule or closed completely for the day.

In Ely this morning it's minus 35, and it's minus 46 in International Falls.

Update: The Salvation Army Harbor Lights Shelter in Minneapolis reported that a homeless woman died overnight of the cold as she was walking to the shelter -- but that turned out to be rumor.

This Arctic turn won't last forever, though. Forecasters say the Twin Cities will see a high today of minus 4, on Saturday we'll creep back up above zero to 1 degree, and on Sunday we may reach 8.

There's also a wind chill advisory in effect for much of the state, which as we all know means that the air can feel far, far colder than it actually is. Here's the National Weather Service's wind chill chart.
