Seventeen-year-old Leonard B. Baker will spend the next 23 years of his life in prison after pleading guilty in January to beating another teenager to death with a shovel in Wirth Park last summer. He was sentenced today.

James Teto Grant's decomposing body was found last July submerged in Bassett Creek, tied to a car battery, by a family out for a kayak.

Baker and his accomplice, 16-year-old Emmanuel Garmodhen Myles, told police they had lured the 17-year-old Liberian immigrant to the park to beat him up in a gang initiation rite. Once they were through punching and kicking him, Baker beat him over the head with a shovel.

Grant was still alive, but barely, when the boys left him hidden in the brush and went to a hardware store to buy more shovels and bury him. When they returned, they elected instead to tie him to the car battery and submerge his body.

Myles was convicted of murder in December and sentenced to 31 years in prison in January.
