Madison union supporters plan Minneapolis demonstration Monday afternoon
More than 1,000 people turned out on Saturday in St. Paul to demonstrate solidarity with union workers in Madison, and now a march has been scheduled for 4 p.m. today in downtown Minneapolis.
The rally starts at 4 p.m. Monday.
A rally will begin at 4 p.m. at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 6th St. S., and be followed by the march to a location that has yet to be announced.
Organizers say that rally attendees will be able to write messages of support for Wisconsin workers on an oversized banner which will be delivered to the Capitol in
Madison.
On Friday, the Wisconsin Assembly passed a union-busting bill that has drawn demonstrators to the state Capitol for two weeks. But the bill can't be voted on in the Senate because its 14 Democrats have fled the state.
Police in Madison refused a request from one Gov. Scott Walker's appointees over the weekend to clear the building by force. It has been occupied by camped-out protesters for two weeks.
"People here have acted lawfully and responsibly," Wisconsin Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs said. "There's no reason to consider arrests."
The weekend demonstration in St. Paul was part of coordinated demonstrations in state capitals around the country.
