Bikes. Safe.
We here in America's best bike city may have proven there's some usefulness to that old bumper sticker, "Start Seeing Bicyclists," aimed at making the roads safer for everyone.

As the number of bike commuters in Minneapolis has leaped upward, the rate of bike accidents has plummeted.

There were about 3,000 bike commuters in 1993 compared to about 8,000 in 2008, the city says. During that time, the bike crash rate--the ratio of reported crashes to bicycle commuters--went from a high of 12 percent in 1997 to an all-time low of 5 percent in 2008.

The data on bike riders comes from the number of Minneapolis workers ages 16 and older who reported commuting primarily by bike. The crash data comes from reports filed by Minneapolis public works, police, and parks police departments.

Maybe there really is safety in numbers.
