Gail Elin Gagne ordered to register as a sex offender

​Gail Elin Gagne, daughter and granddaughter of Minnesota pro wrestling legends, has been ordered to register as a sex offender in the wake of a scandal in which she admitted bedding a 16-year-old Cretin Derham Hall student in 2008.

The now 28-year-old woman was the school's weight room supervisor when she befriended the work study student, bought him meals, and had sex with him at her Bloomington home and at a motel near the Mall of America.

​She was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to misdemeanor fifth-degree criminal sexual charges in February as a way to avoid two felony charges. Along with her convicted sex offender status, she also received a one-year stayed prison sentence, a $300 fine, and an order not to work with minors.

​Gagne had started to build a fledgling career for herself at the St. Paul school. Hired in November 2007 as an assistant basketball coach, she became a substitute teacher and the weight room supervisor in 2008, and later that year became a full-time teacher. But police issued a warrant for her arrest in December 2009 after being tipped off about her relationship with the student.

The story of a Catholic high school teacher having illicit sex with a student would probably have generated headlines by itself. But her name helped draw even more attention to the scandal. Gail Gagne is the daughter of pro wrestler Greg Gagne, and the granddaughter of Verne Gagne, a pro wrestler now in the grips of Alzheimers Disease at a care facility in Bloomington.
