Ken Kratz, sexting DA, won't face criminal charges
In Wisconsin, it might be shocking and totally inappropriate for a district attorney to send racy text messages to a "young, hot nymph" while prosecuting her ex-boyfriend for nearly strangling her to death, but evidently it's not criminal.
Kenneth Kratz: I am the prize!
That's what former Calumet County DA Ken Kratz learned today from Assistant Attorney General Tom Storm.
"Our prosecutors have concluded that they can not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed a specific violation of a criminal law," said Department of Justice spokesman Bill Cosh in a statement.
Stephanie Van Groll came forward last year with copies of the some of the texts, and told police that she had been afraid to act sooner because she didn't think Kratz would follow through with the prosecution of her boyfriend.
The sexts show Kratz thought he was quit the Lothario:
-- Are you the kind of girl that likes secret contact with an older married elected DA ... the riskier the better?
-- Hey ... Miss Communication, what's the sticking point? Your low self-esteem and you fear you can't play in my big sandbox? Or???
-- I'm the atty. I have the $350,000 house. I have the 6-figure career. You may be the tall, young, hot nymph but I am the prize!
-- I would not expect you to be the other woman. I would want you to be so hot and treat me so well that you'd be THE woman! R U that good?
In all, 15 women eventually filed complaints against Kratz. One said he tried to lure her to a morgue after a date. Another said Kratz sexted her after he sought his help in seeking a pardon for an old drug conviction. After former Gov. Jim Doyle began the process of trying to force him from office, he resigned. But he's ducked punishment so far. Besides the announcement today from the state attorney general, the Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation and the Wisconsin Crime Victims' Rights Board also opted not to look into his conduct.
