Michele Bachmann's health care funding conspiracy theory debunked

Rep. Michele Bachmann insisted over and over again on Sunday's Meet the Press and on Facebook that she was privy to a sinister plot by President Barack Obama to hide $105 billion worth of funding in the health care reform law.

The story has about as much truth as the hogwash she peddled about the cost of the president's trip to India.

There was a Congressional Research Service report that just was issued in February, and we discovered that secretly, unbeknownst to members of Congress, over $105 billion was hidden in the Obamacare legislation to fund the implementation of Obamacare. This is something that wasn't known. This money was broken up, hidden in various parts of the bills.

She's been making hay with the same meme on Facebook:

She's not telling the truth. Again. MinnPost tracked down Bachmann spokesman Doug Sachtleben, and got him to admit that the $105 billion wasn't hidden at all.
"Clearly the language was there, but at the same time it was not made evident to members," he said. "This information is really just now coming to the surface the way that it should."

Bachmann didn't read the bill she voted on.
Not made evident?

The $105 billion was not put in there secretly, "hidden, unbeknownst to members of Congress." Sachtleben says so himself.

And Bachmann, like everyone else in the House, had three full months to dissect the bill between the time the Senate passed its version, in December 2009, and the House voted on the final measure in March 2010.

This is indeed a scathing indictment; however, it begs the question, “Why did it take the Republican congresswoman and former Congressman Ernest Istook of Oklahoma two years to uncover and expose the pre-funding of 105 billion dollars?” It seems that the chickens are coming home to roost after all. The Democrats stole Uncle Sam’s car and took it for a joy ride while the Republicans were asleep at the gate. And now Ms. Bachmann cries, “Fowl!”

From the article "No news. No secret. No conspiracy. The real issue seems to be that Bachmann didn't read the very bill she voted on."

And she wants to be President? President of what, loonies anonymous?

Once again the lamestream media has it wrong. The funding was hidden in a big stack of pages with lots of words on them. It gave me a headache to read all those words, one after another. I'm so sick of people expecting me to not make up stuff. If the liberals didn't want me to lie and make up stuff about their healthcare bill it should have been a page or two long with some pictures.

Once again I'd like to thank all the amazingly smart conservative thinkers that defend me on City Pages. kirk is absolutely right, why should I be responsible for the words of my spokesperson. Just because I hired them to speak for me doesn't mean anyone should expect accuracy or sanity from them. One thing we all know is Michelle Bachmann does not have a reputation as someone that says crazy and stupid things all the time. This is obviously the spokesperson's fault. Case Closed. Any questions?

Bachmann has been promising to "defund" the ACA for over a year. Now she "discovers" that the ACA has funding appropriations. What a shock! What a secret! What a conspiracy!

Just what was she planning to "defund"? The very appropriations outlined in the report to Congress in October of 2010 (the report that Kirk failed to read, despite Van Denburg's link), of course.

Maybe Bachmann really thought that there was no funding for the Affordable Care Act. She seems to have a problem with facts and figures, after all. But if that is the case, what exactly has she been promising to "defund" all of this time? It makes no sense to promise to "defund" legislation that has no funding, so she must have known of these appropriations.

If these documented (in the bill) appropriations were such a huge fraud and conspiracy why aren't other Republican leaders picking it up and running with it?

Ya, lets not trust Bachmann, lets trust her spokesman Doug Sachtleben."Spokesman", not "legislative review expert".

Wow, I'm sure Minnpost's exemplary undercover investigative practices will be revered throughout the free world, and picked up by many of the "Bachmann Hating" news affiliates state and nation wide!

Ok from the above article, "This report summarizes those mandated appropriations and fund transfers."Those pertaining to what?A few of those? Some of those? Most of those? All of those? Those over there but not here?

Piss poor legislative language here people!

I agree, could Bachmann or her spokesman please clarify whatever the hell she is talking about? At least explain where all the money was hidden, and how it is possible everyone missed it the first time they read the bill? Thanks
