Tim Pawlenty can't make friends on Facebook
Tim Pawlenty just loves the "wave of the future" that is Facebook. It's just not clear that Facebook loves him back.
You don't get to 100,000 friends without being more interesting than Tim Pawlenty
When the former Minnesota governor announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee this week, he did it on Facebook. That's what a hip, tech-savvy dude would do, right? As Pawlenty told Fox News, announcing your campaign on Facebook is "cutting edge."
Unfortunately for Pawlenty, it doesn't look like Facebook is convinced that he's such a tubular future-forward personality.
Before his announcement, Pawlenty had 74,000 "likes" on his Facebook page. Afterwards, he had gained a paltry 5,000 more. As NBC points out, since you had to "like" his page just to see his announcement, it's a safe bet that many of those additions were actually reporters who had to "like" him just to get the video.
Still, 80,000 people is a lot of people to be liked by, right? Hardly. Perhaps you've heard of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin? 2,846,000 likes. Even up-and-coming loose cannon presidential contender Michele Bachmann has 204,000.
Nobody's asking, but here's some unsolicited advice for Pawlenty's social media team: exclusive content. Specifically, we're hoping for more of his spectacular campaign ads, ideally featuring explosions, car-chases, and helicopter shots of his red-hot smoking wife surrounded by exploding automobiles.
