"You people sicken me," welfare recipient tells critics: Comment of the day

Comment of the day: Ease up on the hate for welfare recipients.
We wrote recently about Minnesota Republicans pushing a bill that would prohibit people who use EBT cards--government assistance on plastic--from withdrawing cash at ATMs with the cards, except for $20 per month.

Comments below that post devolved into an open-season attack on welfare recipients, to which Lisa replied: "You people sicken me. Newsflash: We as a country are just starting to recover from a painful recession in which many people lost both homes and jobs."

Some people lost everything, and you jerks would begrudge them using the safety net because a few folks take advantage of the system.

Full disclosure: I'm 30, have earned my BA, and worked since I was 15, including full-time while also a full-time student. I paid taxes the entire time. Had my first child when I was 28, left my job to move back home and have my baby. Right when I did so, the recession hit hard, and eventually I had to go on public assistance.

What kills me is that you folks act like getting public assistance is somehow living the sweet life. The food allocation is sufficient, but the cash assistance is utterly paltry. Here in MI, you get less than $500 a month. Don't get me wrong, I was grateful to get it, but try paying rent, heat, lights, buy clothes, and gas/bus pass with $500 a month.

Are welfare recipients really just freeloaders and parasites? Let us know in the comments.

I myself also believe that they should make more restrictions on what you can purchase with ebt and cash assistance. I also believe that there are people that use the system, but there are people that sometimes need a little help at times. You can't condem every person that needs help sometimes. Every job is not secure and every person doesn't have a nest egg to fall back on. It is not a perfect world. If I was to lose my job and there is nothing available I would feel secure enough in myself that I have worked the last 20 years and paid enough taxes to go on public assistance to feed my family and kids. It is not a free ride when my tax money has been taken for that many years. I thank the Lord I have not been put in that situation yet. If it comes to that point shame on all of you people that judge.

Stores will still accept EBT for your food and gas. Right now you can use your EBT for Alcohol and Cigarettes or even at the casino. That has to end. By limiting the cash withdraw to $20 a month, this will help prevent fraudulent purchases. (like that rock from the man on the corner) By limiting the anonymous amount of spending a person can do with the public's money, we will have greater understanding of what the "needy" attribute as a need in everyday life. Also, there is a bill requiring a persons photo to be placed on the EBT card in the works. Did you know that as of now, they don't even check to see if it's your EBT card? Major flaws in this system and they need to be checked! The majority of people didn't end up on welfare because they made wise decisions in life. The system is there to provide assistance to those down on their luck, and it's currently it's being exploited. Lisa you're clueless and in the 10%.It's about freaking time the fix this! This is common sense people! This is a simple fiscal policy, not a personal targeting.

I am truly amazed at the number of conservatives who honestly believe that anyone can just quit their job, go on welfare for decades, and continue at their current standard of living. When I ask where they heard this, the reply is that "everybody knows" this is true.

So, if one believes this complete lie, it is much easier to see people on public assistance as lazy parasites. And, having taken that step into delusion, it is easy to apply racial stereotypes and believe that the majority of people on public assistance are racial minorities.

Unsurprisingly, when I ask these same conservatives why they don't just quit their jobs and live that sweet life on welfare, the answer is that they are too proud to do that.

I only wish they were too proud to lap up the lies and propaganda that circulate without challenge among those on those in the Republican Party.

Here is a similar story

Racing to beat tight deadlines, Republican legislators are cobbling together a budget outline that prevents income tax increases but appears destined to prompt a veto by the governor.

In the past two weeks, the process took on the tone of a big, partisan brawl. But what happens next will likely set the stage for the final act of this year's legislative drama, as the two sides careen toward adjournment and a solution to the state's $5 billion projected deficit.

Pretty sure that Jesus also said "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.” (Matthew 25:40) Also, "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned..." (Luke 6:37) and "You cannot serve both God and Money." (Matthew 6:24). Let's not forget "But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." (Luke 14:13) If you're gonna play the Jesus card, how can you ignore that so much of his teachings including taking care of those in need?

To say that there is zero abuse of the system would be ignorant. But the MAJORITY of the people utilizing public assistance are doing their damnedest to improve their situation, frantically searching for jobs that don't exist (often because they have been shipped overseas, thanks to companies like GE), trying desperately to save their homes and their dignity. Many of them feel ashamed and embarrassed by the fact that they have reached that level of need. It is truly a very last resort. Behind every person is a story. Who are you to judge?

Once again the pro-poor people lamestream media has to blast Republicans. Why do poor people have such a stranglehold on the media in this country?!?!!?!?!?! How are we going to pay for all these freeloaders? Take it from corporate welfare? Why should GE, Exxon Mobil, or Bank of America pay more in taxes than some lazy welfare queen with a bunch of snot nose kids running around? Remember Republicans are the party of Christian family values. As we all know Jesus spent most of his time arguing for tax cuts for the rich and English as an official language.

The average welfare recipient in the USA is a white woman with children. Draw your own conclusions, but don't try to make this about the urban poor because that's just the PR spin from the right. The poor now come in all colors, flavors and neighborhoods.

Um, my husband, three children and I were on the supplemental nutrition assistance (SNAP) program a year ago, before my husband - praise God, finally found a decent-paying full-time job. They NEVER allowed me to use my EBT card on alcohol and cigarettes. Have you even done a tiny bit of research on this?!?! Where are you getting these "facts?"

Here's a list, from the USDA, of what an individual on SNAP benefits may purchase with his/her EBT card:http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/r...

As for retailers not checking to see if its your EBT card, let me ask you this: How many times does a retailer ask you for photo identification when you use your debit card at check-out and type in your PIN number? Doesn't happen very often, right? Well, the EBT cards have to be set up with a PIN number, and are swiped and used just like a debit card. You might never even realize you were waiting in line behind a SNAP recipient at the grocery store, because the whole process looks like nothing more than using a debit card to pay for purchases.

But wouldn't it make more sense to make the poor move into camps where their access to drugs and gambling would be more easily restricted? And wouldn't camp cafeterias be more efficient than making poor people go out to buy their own food? Cafeterias could assure only healthy food would be served, not junk like chips and pop.

Then again, wouldn't it make more sense to pump money into our schools so kids would grow up learning how to make a living, eat wisely and not get sucked into deadend pastimes like gambling?

That's so mean! Who are you to tell others what they can do with other people's money!!!

I think Jesus would probably help the poor himself rather than taking money from some other people via the Government to do it. I don't think he was that lazy.

Do you wish to recreate Auschwitz Mark? Or perhaps a cattle farm?Sind Sie ein Zug Güterwagen Stuffer Mark?

Um Mark, the Minnesota K-12 budget has increased almost 50% since 2000, and some how the schools receiving the biggest money increases have had their test scores and graduation rates go down. Hmmm....

Show us one instance where more money made a school perform better. How again would "pumping money into our schools" promote good lifestyles?Don't those skills best come from Family?

Sounds like Socialism 101, "raise my kids for me, I'm too stupid to do so".

All I can say to you Bo is until you've experienced the person's life you are blasting you have no right to criticize. There are free loaders out there and then there are those who really need the services and you are lumping them all into one thats a bad thing to do. As was taught in the bible let ye who has not sinned cast the first stone and that doesn't mean only if you have gotten public assisstance the means if you have ever sinned Saint BO

Wow, it's true: rightwingers really are irony impaired. Hint: take the second graf at face value but ignore the sarcastic first graf. And yes, I hit "like" instead of "reply" by accident so don't let it go to your head.
