Earthquake hits Minnesota
Granted, the 2.5 magnitude earthquake that rattled Alexandria in the middle of last night might not have raised an eyebrow along the San Andreas Fault, or next to the Fukushima nuclear power plant, but here up north the temblor rates as a bona fide geologic event. ![]()
A little bit of shaking going on.
The United States Geologic Survey reported that the quake was centered about 39 miles southeast of Fergus Falls and 55 miles north of Willmar.
It did not tear the Earth asunder.
The Alexandria Echo Press heard from readers who felt their bedroom walls vibrate for a few seconds. ![]()

Sgt. Tom Egan of the Douglas County sheriff's office told the St. Cloud Times that dispatchers in the county's 911 center also felt the quake, and took calls from dozens of people wanting to know what in tarnation was going on.
No one was reported hurt during the rocking and rolling, he said.

How does a 2.5 quake compare to The Big Ones? The quake that destroyed a huge portion of eastern Japan in March was a 9.0. The 1989 Loma Prieta quake in San Francisco measured 6.9.
The last time an earthquake hit Minnesota was in 1994, in Yellow Medicine County. It rated a 3.1.
