Keith Ellison isn't patriotic enough for Herman Cain

In pizza millionaire Herman Cain's world, all Muslims are anti-American Sharia crazies bent on forcing their religion down everyone's throats. And Cain, a Christian Republican who is toying with a presidential run, and who figures it's OK to force his religion down everyone's throats, has special venom reserved to DFL Rep., and Muslim, Keith Ellison.

"So Keith Ellison you think would be more in favor of Sharia law than the Declaration of Independence?" right field radio talker Laura Ingraham asked him.

"Didn't he take his oath on the Qur'an instead of the Bible?"

Yes he did, on Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an.

Well then, Cain says, Ellison can't be a real American because:

"If you take an oath on the Qur'an, that means you support Sharia law. I support American law. Our laws were derived from principles that are biblically based. Maybe not said in the same words that are in the Bible, but our laws are derived from principles based upon the Bible. This is why I'm not going to back down or pander to anyone who wants to call me xenophobic or a bigot simply because I said no. I don't want anybody in my administration that I'm going to have to be looking over my shoulder to figure out if they are going to try to do something against the principles that I believe in which are also the principles that the majority, the overwhelming majority of the American people believe." Let's break that down.

Cain seems to think that by swearing an oath on a Qur'an, Ellison is promising to pass Sharia law. By that logic, anyone who swears an oath on a Bible must be trying to pass biblical laws. But which ones? We're looking forward to new rules about women wearing pants, stoning adulterers, and tattoo parlors.

Cain says our laws are biblically based. But the framers of the Constitution, in their eternal wisdom, purposely left out any direct mention of god or Christianity or the Bible. They could see theocrats like Cain coming from a mile away. That's why Thomas Jefferson talked about "a wall of separation between church and State." That's why we have the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment.

And Cain's pretty adamant that only his version of patriotic Americans -- i.e. non-Muslim Americans -- would ever be allowed to serve in a Cain Administration at the White House. Perhaps he's not familiar with Article 6 of the Constitution, which specifically requires that, "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

Despite all this, we'll take Cain's word when he says he's not a bigot.

Goodness sir. Congratulations! You are the proud author of the most disjointed missive I have read all week, and I am an editor. Mr. Van Denburg's not very controversial primary point appears to be that Herman Cain is full of shite. Your response, if that is what it is, is to offer extended Thomas Jefferson heavy breathing and straight out of central casting use of the word liberal, complete with creative use of grammar. Somehow, Herman Cain is still full of shite.
