Timothy Ayman Bakdash is going to be charged with second degree murder this morning in the wake of a hit-and-run incident more than a week ago in Dinkytown that fatally wounded Benjamin Van Handel, a U of M student.

The criminal complaint alleges that Bakdash, of Roseville, had been drinking at The Library Bar and gotten into an argument with a group of people who he then set out to run down on purpose.

He got into his Mitsubishi Galant, turned the wrong way down 5th Street SE, a one-way street, hit the gas, steered the car onto the sidewalk, and mowed down Van Handel and two other women early April 15. [Read the complaint here.]

Handel died Thursday of massive brain injuries, the same day that Minneapolis police arrested Bakdash. The two women with Van Handel were badly injured, but survived.

"Defendant admitted he intended to hit and kill three of the people there," the complaint said.

Police caught up with Bakdash after he unloaded the car for $1,500 to a witness identified only as B.B. in the complaint. B.B. told police he heard Bakdash's mother, Diane, on the telephone tell her son to sell the car ASAP, and she signed the Galant's title at sale.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman has scheduled a news conference this afternoon to flesh out details on the charges against Bakdash.

I feel somebodys mother will do anything to protect their children, you don't know what he told his mom about the events that night the car was sold the next day she may not have known the extent of the damage or if a person was invalved at all! She has nothing on her record violent or otherwise. Its my experience that the police get paid to find the bad guy and make him look like a violent calculated criminal so by the time he hits the court room the jury already has a guilty verdict locked in thier mind because thats what the news reported. think of this scenario, they arrest him in the same day they arrest his mom and tell him that his mom will be let go if he just admits what he did then lead him into a saying some bull story of a fight outside a bar- and by the way they never did find the guys that he supposably had the scuffle with him witch is why it dipped from first degree to 2nd degree murder, but who cares cuz they r t have enough for second degree murder because of what do you led him into admitting But all the time nobody stops to think maybe we should find the guys he had the scuffle with before we charge him with any kind a murder other then manslaughter. I'm not saying he's innocent I'm just sayin look outside the box. if the cops and prosecutors put an innocent man in jail they still get to keep their jobs.

Why is it that this particular mug shot has an indefinite hold and will not be released?

I hope he never gets out of jail. This should be first degree murder, intentionally running over pedestrians does not in any way offer grounds for a"heat of the moment" situation, and the fact that this thing (I will not refer to him as a person as that would imply humanity) got into his car and sought out the victims means that this was premeditated. Being drunk does not mean that you can lapse your morality and having prior alcohol related offenses only furthers my anger with this thing. Oh and not regretting the murder should result in the longest prison term possible.

Based on the information here, am I the only one that thinks that Bakdash's mother should be charged with aiding and abetting?

Which is why I objected to Pawlenty referring to his staffer's multiple DUI convictions as "mistakes". I wonder if the same conservative commenters who defended the Pawlenty staffer will also term this incident as a 'mistake'. Do people have to actually die before conservatives will admit that a crime is nothing more than a 'mistake'? Or is it only a 'mistake' if the criminal is a fellow conservative?

No, Dan, You aren't the only one. Geesh, what the hell?!? What could they have been arguing about that warrants murder like this?

What is up with people like you who make every story political? give it up. This story is tragic and has nothing to do with politics.

A while back some asshole killed a bouncer over at Nye's because he'd been kicked out for the evening. Guy walked for an hour and a half in mid-March to home and back so that he could grab a gun and shoot the bouncer. After that I gave up on trying to figure out the stupid reasons that people kill people.
