Michele Bachmann compares taxes to Holocaust
| Michele Bachmann: Time to invoke the corollary to Godwin's Rule. |
To suggest that there is a moral equivalent between systematic genocide led by a crazed dictator and an argument among democratically elected representatives over how best to fund our government is absurd on its face.
Bachmann tried to smooth over her painful comparison by saying that "There is no analogy to that horrific action."
But then she went right ahead and made the analogy anyway:
"We are seeing eclipsed in front of our eyes a similar death and a similar taking away. It is this disenfranchisement that I think we have to answer to."
No. The Nazi Holocaust and the American tax code are not, in any sense, "a similar death and a similar taking away."
Maybe it's time to invoke the corollary to Godwin's Rule: People who fall back on Hitler analogies have automatically lost their argument--and respect.
