Bradlee Dean uses "suicide prevention" to raise money for anti-gay ministry

Bradlee Dean, the man behind the ministry.
When Julia Miller pulled into the BP station on Lexington and St. Anthony in St. Paul last month, she was immediately approached by a young man from an organization called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International.

While Miller pumped her gas, the young man walked up and cleaned her windshield, while launching into his pitch.

"He was a pretty good salesman," Miller recalls. "He asked if I wanted to donate to suicide prevention. I usually don't make donations on the street, because I don't know where it's going, but I had recently lost a friend to suicide, so my guard was down."

The card Julia Miller received after donating to "suicide prevention."
Miller walked over to a table where the man's partner was sitting with a jar for donations. They wanted $20. Miller gave him $5, and in return was given a pair of fliers.

She didn't really think about it again until last week, when Bradlee Dean, the head of the You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International ministry, made headlines with a universally condemned prayer before the state legislature.

Soon the major news outlets were discovering what many bloggers have known for years: Dean and his ministry are spectacularly homophobic. Dean has called for gays to be arrested and jailed, and has said Muslim extremists are "more moral" than American Christians because they call for the execution of homosexuals.

Miller isn't the only one who was told a story of charitable work by one of the ministry's street teams.

A City Pages commenter reports a similar encounter at a Holiday gas station two years ago:

"They pitched me about their efforts, which I was told were solely to educate teens and veterans on suicide prevention. I was touched by their mission and gave them $20."

Tony Marous, the manager of the BP station on Lexington, says he got a slightly different version when he was first approached by a woman from Dean's ministry late last year.

"They told me they were collecting money to help people on drugs," he says.

That sounded like a good cause to Marous, so he allowed the Ministry to set up a fund-raising table at his station. They've been there two or three times a month ever since, he says.

Yet the group's most current 990 tax filings confess to an altogether different mission:

"To reshape America by redirecting our youth morally and spiritually through education. (Hosea 4:6) The ministry's street teams spoke to over 250,000 people last year concerning their spiritual destiny and our nation's religious history."

I've seen these idiots camped out in front of the entry to Walmart in St. Anthony Village. Thankfully, I've never given them a cent. If ever I see these dirtbags again, I won't hesitate to give them a piece of my mind.

Here is what this money is being spent on - hate TV for kids. Bradlee Dean is now running a paid television program on WUCW - CW a local network in the Twin Cities.  AKA The Twin Cities - TV To Talk About (that is for sure). The program appears to be aimed at children and features music videos.  They request money and provide links to get more information about their extreme views.   You can contact WUCW directly at the following.

Mailing Address:

The CW Twin Cities - WUCW

1640 Como Ave.

St. Paul, MN 55108

Phone & Fax Numbers:

Phone: 651-646-2300

Fax: 651-646-122

You can also call Comcast at 1-800-COMCAST.  When I contacted them they refused to even contact WUCW so they apparently are supporting the programming by failing to get involved.  WUCW has a history of failing to vet their programming.

I saw these clowns at Walmart and complained.  Walmart said they are no longer welcome there since they lied about who they are and what they really do.  I also complained to Walmart headquarters.  They are going to ban them from Sams Club as well.  Everytime we see these asshole bigots we need to complain to corporate headquarters.   Cut off his funding and hopefully he will go away.  Friends say they were spotted at Holiday Gas Station, Super America and Coburns.

Less than $17k a year goes into their stated "ministry". $280k goes to paying the people who beg for money. And they gross a million a year. They don't state how much Dean himself is paid, but judging by what's "left over" it would appear to be substantial - and free of taxes.

1.7% of their gross income goes into these assemblies, which is supposedly what they "do". In contrast, 28% of their gross income goes straight into the pockets of the beggars - er, 'ministers'.

Each of these assemblies cost over $3k? Really? The venue is free, I would assume. Even if the band was paid $1k to play a few songs, the 'speakers' are getting $2k for each assembly? Even the tiny amount of money they spend on these assemblies (relative to their gross) seems suspect.

Good job following up on this, Mr. Pinto. There is undoubtedly more dirt beneath the surface here.

Which is against the law (not to mention immoral--almost as immoral as their inherent bigotry).  Perhaps they should be investigated and prosecuted?

I've run across the Run But You Can't Hide groups setting up shop at local gas stations and grocery stores many times in the southern 'burbs over the last few years.  These kids are trained very well for their sales pitches, the content of which always leads with a blatant lie.  I've been told more than once they are seeking funding for the local schools on drug prevention/suicide prevention programs that they run.  When pressed, it always takes them SEVERAL denials before they finally admit to me they aren't actually, officialy affiliated with the school system.  Teaching kids to lie.  Nice.

I've had several run ins with Bradlee Dean and his various organizations.  About 12 years ago when I was in high school, one of his groups, Junkyard Prophet was invited to talk at our school several times.  They were functioning as a band at that time and mostly played Christian rock music while telling stories about how they had lived the hard life before finding salvation in God.

This group was also invited to speak to the youth group I was a member of at my chruch.  I was so traumatized by the experience, I cried myself to sleep every night for weeks.  Bradlee Dean and other members of his group had told me that I was commiting adultry by "lusting" after a boy at school that I had a crush on and that I would go to hell if I didn't repent because I was breaking God's commandments.  They also proceded to tell me and the group that we would go to hell for breaking any of man's laws, and the example they used was exceeding the speed limit, because "man's laws are really God's laws".  The examples of morality that this group preaches are outragous.  A 16 year old going to hell for having a crush on another kid?

I've encountered them before with their suicide prevention sales pitch too.  As someone who has personally suffered from depression, I was all to willing to donate to the cause.  That is until I started asking a couple more questions and the guy manning the donation table told me that he was with Junkyard Prophet and proceeded to tell me that today's youth are confused by messages from the media that it's ok to be gay while in their hearts and more moral folks tell them it's wrong.  The ensuing conflict of information and lack of spiritual guidence lead these teens to kill themselves.  As soon as I heard the name of the group, I started to back away, but after hearing their whole stance on what was causing teen suicide, I took my money back and ran away as fast as I could.

I'm pretty sure Jesus was pretty consistent in his teachings on things like this namely as long as you are getting the liberals and the gays anything you do is ok.   Lying, stealing, and murder are all ok as long as your ultimate goal is picking on gay people.   Remember the teachings of Jesus and spread his hate and evil throughout the world.   Hail Sat-......I'm sorry Hail Jesus.

The Salvation Army does the same thing.  That kettle money goes in part to their anti-gay lobbyists in Washington.
