Derek Boogaard suffered from substance addiction
The New York Post reported that Boogaard had been receiving counseling from the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program in the weeks leading up to his death.
"Sources close to the situation stressed it would ... be unfair to draw inferences from Boogaard's participation in the program as to the cause of his death," the Post said.
The Star Tribune also revealed today that Derek Boogaard had previously entered the league's substance-treatment program under the guise of a concussion when he was with the Wild.
In addition, Star Tribune sources say when Boogaard missed most of the Wild's training camp in 2009 and the first two weeks of the season under the guise of a concussion, he actually was entered into Stage 1 of the program.Previous Coverage
