Schultz sorry for "right-wing slut" jab at Laura Ingraham

Can't we all just get along?
The pride of University of Minnesota Moorhead and lefty MSNBC host Ed Schultz sure beat himself up pretty good last night after calling radio host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut."

"I have been in this business since 1978, and I have made a lot of mistakes," he said during an apology that aired last night. "This is the lowest of low for me."

Then MSNBC suspended him.

Rats, Ingraham tweeted. Now his ratings are going to go up.

The fracas got started on Tuesday. Schultz was taking shots at Fox News and assorted right wing radio folks for getting in a tizzy over Barack Obama carrying on with a planned state visit to Great Britain, during which that tornado ripped up Joplin, Missouri.

Schultz aimed his barb directly at Ingraham:

Rain, thunderstorms, winds getting whipped into tornadoes of horrific proportions. Hot weather, all of this stuff. And what are the Republicans thinking about? They're not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They're just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday. But you know what they're talking about? Like this right-wing slut, what's her name, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she's a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama's doing it, they're working him over.

Ingraham took to Facebook to register her unhappiness. By Wednesday, MSNBC had pulled him off the air for a week without pay.

Re. the crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book "Of Thee I Zing." Now I'm tempted to insert one additional zing--about men who preach civility but practice misogyny.

Schultz taped a four-minute apology that aired ilast night.

"On my radio show yesterday, I used vile and inappropriate language when talking about talk show host Laura Ingraham. I am deeply sorry, and I apologize. It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said.

I apologize to you, Laura and ask for your forgiveness. It doesn't matter what the circumstances were. It doesn't matter that it was on radio and I was ad libbing. None of that matters. None of that matters. What matters is what I said was terribly vile and not of the standards that I or any other person should adhere to.

Fair enough. Schultz is pugnacious. He's the kind of guy who wades into a drunken horde of college football fans looking to nail some slob who heaved a whiskey through his broadcaster's booth window. He likes a good fight. But the powers that be said this went a little far.

That said, we don't recall Ingraham getting suspended for calling Meghan McCain fat, or Rush Limbaugh ever taking off a week without pay for calling Democrats Nazis.
