Police Chief Tim Dolan scorns "shoot first" bill: "Don't be naive"

Dolan: Don't shoot first.
All Republican Rep. Tony Cornish wants is for every Minnesotan to be able to shoot first and ask questions later if they find an intruder in their homes, and he's getting damned testy about the top cops from Minnesota's largest cities standing in his way. Why don't they love America like he does?

Because the bill he's pushing is naive, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan says.

First in a press conference and then using MPD's Facebook page, Dolan says people who believe the Cornish bill will make them safer are falling for a lot of emotional hype that isn't backed by actual hard evidence.

The presumption that someone who carries a gun is safer is false. A study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that those without guns are four times safer than those with guns when confronted by an armed assailant. Having and wearing a gun comes with heavy responsibilities and risks. The most well trained people in the United States with guns are your police, and yet we are still targets of those who would commit crimes. We are also very aware that every physical confrontation we have involves at least one gun. Please do not be naïve about guns. If you are extremely not well trained and capable of retraining a weapon while under physical assault, you are much more likely to be shot or killed by the very gun you carry.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman calls the Cornish bill a solution looking a problem. St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith wonders whether the bill makes it open season on cops already working dangerous city streets.

But Cornish, the police chief in Lake Crystal, population 2,549, and who likes to wear little handcuffs for lapel jewelry, has better handle on law enforcement in the big city than the big shots getting under his skin. And he's "totally aggravated to see those chiefs stand up there to violate people's rights. They're just scaring the public."

Totally.

Big city chiefs are appointed by liberal mayors who just repeat their bosses lies so they can retain their job.  The rank and file know better.  They are not concerned about law-abiding armed citizens as they know we're on their side as long as they don't obey an unlawful/unconstitutional order to confiscate our guns.  New Orleans - never again.http://secondamendmentwarrior....  If you believe in the Second Amendment.Retired LEO

"capable of retraining a weapon"  How do you retrain a weapon.  You can retrain people but guns just do nothing.  We should not fear the government, the government should fear us.

Here in PA, there will soon be an expansion of the Castle Defense. It will allow standing your ground against an attacker any place a person has a legal right to be, and provide general immunity against criminal or civil charges. Can you imagine if the MN big city yahoos were faced with that? How they would be howling?

such laws exist in many states already and each was preceeded by prophesy of death and destruction that never happened though there have been cases of innocents being able to save themselves because of them.

" The most well trained people in the United States with guns are your police..."

I would like to know how many negligent discharges his department has had in the last few years.  And yes I mean negligent.  There is no such thing as an accidental discharge of a weapon.

I would also like to see that number of NDs by police compared to those of licensed to carry a handgun.

Do you know what happens when laws like these pass? Absolutely nothing, except criminals now avoid invading occupied homes. No blood in the streets or home shootouts. Nothing. Just criminal;s quietly switching to unoccupied daylight burglaries.

When are these retards going to drop the doom rhetoric? Castle doctrine and carry laws cause violence to drop, not escalate, in every single instance where they are enacted.

These are the same people who said MN was going to turn into the Wild West when we passed the MN CCW laws. Of course they were wrong then just like they are now. As for police are the most trained with a gun in the United States, that is the most laughable piece of BS I have ever heard.

For the officers shot at while serving a warrant, or executing a raid, were those not actual criminals who did fired on them? They'll have their guns and shoot at you anyway, law or no law.

And what if it was the wrong house, mine, for instance, that you uniformed apes smashed into, waving your guns at me? In that scenario, Sir, none of you are my friends. None of you are policemen. You are my enemy. Screw the socialist "public safety"; you just violated the hell out of MY safety, which is far more important to me.

By the way, did you know that if you compare cops to armed citizens, you cops shoot the wrong person five times more often than the armed citizen does? And I'm supposed to feel safe when you're banging on my door?

Nothing but a fight for POWER AND CONTROL, and the police love their position of power and control. Didn't a cop just shoot another cop, in Coon Rapids during training?  Ya, they have it all under control. Either all law abiding citizens should all have guns (including cops), or no one should have guns including the cops.Enough of this elitist bullshit, where one party has privilege, while others don't!

If Dolan thinks being gunless is the safest way then maybe the police should be gunless too. Then we could all be safe. Possibly Cornish's bill goes too far but the way it is now, in order to protect yourself from prosecution, you almost have to give the intruder the first shot; not too smart when there will probably only be one shot. It's insane when women and the frail can't defend themselves from harm. If Dolan is so concerned about police safety maybe he should consider that any hoodlum taken off the streets by a citizen defending themselves is one less hoodlum that might murder a cop.

"The most well trained people in the United States with guns are your police".

Is that why you are 5 times more likely to be shot by a cop than a permit holder? How about that chief? And if some micreant does get my gun, he'll have to beat me with it because it will be empty.

If he looks like a gang member, dresses like a gang member, then shoot him.

Conceal carry holders don't have ND because they would go to jail. Cops just ge additional training

If anyone wants a good laugh and to see the truth about "The most well trained people in the United States with guns are your police". Google "cop shoot gun in classroom" and watch the video of the cop telling the class "I'm the only one in this room professional enough to handle this gun" at which point he fires a loaded gun in the room with a bunch of kids and hits himself in the leg.

In outstate minnesota - most Sheriff's agree: Home owners need to have at least a shotgun. The more law abiding citizens that are armed the better! Dolan is a tool and not elected. That is the problem. Too much elite socialism. I will gladly shoot any intruder in my home, unless the machete is closer!

First of all there's the 2nd Amendment.  I could end it here but I won't because although your thoughts are legitimate and I agree, there is something else in our favor.  It's called Jury Nullification.  If any one of us is arrested because of the use of a gun for self defense or other legitimate reasons all the jury has to do is say "Not Guilty".  The Supreme Court said that the jury has the power but it doesn't have to be told that it has.  Nice!  Criminals have to be read their (Miranda) rights but law-abiding jurors don't have to be told theirs.  As long as there is one Patriot with a brain on the jury the accused will never be convicted.  There are so many loquacious persons on these blogs that don't know anything or don't do anything or won't spend the time to learn that it's sickening.  Learn all about it then spread the word about it and then they can pass all the stupid laws they want and just don't obey them.  Cops who obey unlawful orders to confiscate guns, like New Orleans, are guilty of Malfeasance of Office and tyrants and may be shot according to the power given to us in the Constitution.  And using Jury Nullification we just say "Not Guilty".  That's it; and a juror cannot be punished based on his verdict.  The judge cannot overturn a Not Guilty verdict.  He can only overturn a Guilty verdict.  Learn, teach all your family and friends and tell them to teach their families and friends until everyone in the US knows and is confident of the ultimate power that we have over the government.  A question for all police officers.  Would you kill me, a law-abiding citizen, just for my gun.  You are the tyrant.  I'm just following my constitutional rights.  Better think about it before some liberal administrator gives you the unlawful order.  Go to: http://secondamendmentwarrior.... and become a Warrior or shut up.

Figure it out silly. A gun is generally empty after you fire all of the ammo in it into an attacker.

Heh! Ol' Lee Paige is still good for a laugh. He sure did put the lie to "only cops are trained enough..."

Did you know that he's the "godfather" of David Codrea's "Only Ones" files?

Your definition of socialism is having a public police force? Or is it just a word you throw on to anything you hate, which I have a feeling is a lot of things.

The public police force you mention has a strong penchant for increasing the "police state".  I believe that is what he is referring to.
