Al Franken joins "It Gets Better" video campaign

Franken and 12 other senators joined Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" campaign.

Al Franken has a solid record as a supporter of gay rights, from his vocal support of gay marriage to voting for and sometimes authoring GLBT-friendly legislation. Now Franken has joined 12 other U.S. Senators in recording an "It Gets Better" video.

The lawmakers are only the latest big names to join Dan Savage's compelling video campaign.

Savage started the campaign last September in response to the suicide of Billy Lucas, a gay teen who'd been bullied in high school. Since then, dozens of celebrities have recorded "It Gets Better" clips, from President Barack Obama to Paris Hilton. Earlier this month, Savage received a Special Achievement Award at the Webbys for the project, which has thrived on YouTube.

Franken and the other dozen senators, all of them Democrats, are among the 25 co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, which created the federal definition of marriage as between one man and one woman.

"In the adult world, people are really valued for their talents, their uniqueness," Franken says in the video. "The very thing that people got harassed for in high school is the very thing people love about a person."

The Twins recently announced that they were thinking about filming an "It Gets Better" spot, though they've not committed to the project. And in May, Dan Savage himself dared Tim Pawlenty, among other conservative politicians, to participate. So far, no word back from T-Paw.

Franken's "It Gets Better" can be seen below.

Al Franken the amnesty King. 18 Million illegals in the country and Al is working to have them keep the jobs you deserve. 9.1% unemployment and Al is for the "Dream" act and every act that can give your jobs away. Keep up the good work Al!

Wow this an easy one. Reagan introduced amnesty, nobody else has. The dream act allows illegal children raised here to apply for citizenship, it doesn't just give it to them & it is still not easy for them to qualify. I believe it is Georgia that just implimented a very tough immigration law & now the farmers have millions of dollars of produce rotting in the fields because the farm workers wont go there & we Americans won't do field work. Remember George Bush & John McCain both authored immigration bills.

Tony: Reagan & McCain were wrong as well. People will flock to Georgia because now the producers have to pay a living wage for the workers. Your comments are elitist, liberal, Anti-american. Along with many Americans: I've done field work, labored in the poultry and beef slaughtering industry, picked garbage. Don't underestimate the work that Americans will or will not do! If you need work: 11,000 jobs are for the taking in Georgia, picking peaches right now!

Al has been a great Senator.   Looks like the Republicans were lying again when they tried to portray Al as some extremist nut that would divide the Senate.   From Day 1 he has been a hard worker that makes smart laws that only a idiot asshole would hate.  It's typical Al Franken to make a "It gets better video."   Just Al standing up for people getting picked on and making the world a better place.    No Republican elected official  would ever make a video like this because all Republicans are cowards who are afraid to stand up to the bigots that make up the Republican party these days.

OK, so I was wrong. Amendments as mush harder to find.  Al Franken did paperclip a 1/2 page "amendment" ONTO A BILL THAT WAS BOUND TO PASS with or with out Al's amendment.MB I was going off information listed on "Project Vote Smart" and "Govtrack"

The Admendment MB is talking about is known as S.AMDT.2588

It amended H.R.3326 (a house bill that already had majority support)Essentially, Al jumped into a marathon in the 25th mile.  Then he got carried across the finish line by the winner which was WAY OUT FRONT.

The putative justification for this is a horrific case in which Jamie Jones, a Halliburton employee in Iraq, who alleges that she was gang-raped in her bedroom by her co-workers. She claims that when she reported the attack to her supervisors, they placed her in a container under armed guard and did not let her leave or call her family for several days. Halliburton HR officials allegedly told her to “get over it” or lose her job, and she asserts that Halliburton attempted to short circuit her lawsuit by sending the case to arbitration.

Given that Franken chose to highlight her case, you might assume that the courts ruled in Haliburton’s favor, and that she was not able to bring her claims in court instead of to an arbitrator. But then you would be wrong. The courts ruled that Halliburton could not arbitrate her claims of assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring, retention and supervision of employees involved in the assault, and false imprisonment.

So why did Franken offer his amendment to ban arbitration? And why an amendment that applies to every company with contracts with the DOD, not just Halliburton? Because it has little to do with ensuring that Jamie Jones gets justice. The courts had already allowed Jones’ lawsuit to go forward. This amendment is a move towards the plaintiff bar’s longstanding goal of banning dispute arbitration. But the allegations in this case are so egregious that it makes it difficult for Members of Congress to stand up for the rights of law-abiding employers.

Making it easier for lawyers to take their cut appeals to lawyers.

There is a very good reason why this was not proposed as a stand alone bill.It clearly shows Al Franken stand on the side of lawyers not Jamie Jones. No wonder the U.S. Bar Association gives Al such a good rating.

Again MB, Al Franken has never passed a "stand alone law", and Al is still a lying "war-monger".

blah blah spin blah blah spin lie lie blah spin   Notice you haven't been able to find anything Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain has done yet on those great websites you like.    Since you were lying about Al being a failure for getting nothing passed  now you have to concede that Michele and Herman are massive failures.  Both would be terrible in any elected position where they would have power or be responsible for getting things done.   I think its worth pointing out because of what an abrasive asshole Michele Bachmann is, she can't even get a bipartisan bill passed like that bridge everyone wants to build.    This is what is called a teachable moment.   See Michele is not only a terrible person, but also a terrible congresswoman.  When stupid idiots like you encourage the evil, stupid, lying, divisive filth Michele is famous for, nothing gets done.   It hurts her district and Minnesota.  Notice that the bridge only moves forward when sensible hard working politicians like Franken and Klobochaur come on board.   Learn a lesson.   Al Franken is what you want in a Senator.  Bachmann is what you want in a clown.

Because we ran out the comment chain, I will post here, because my stick is sharp, and love to poke ya. (don't get excited)AL franken has successfully "introduced" quite a few bills. NONE HAVE BECOME LAW YET!So when I said "what smart law", I should have put more emphasis on the word "law"I also meant, only bills that Al "sponsored".  In other words, put forth by himself, NOT cosponsored or gravy trained on the hard work and backs of others. The bills you guys listed, he did not sponsor. So as you see MB, this was a loaded question.Previously suckered by Al Franken on he phony anti-war stance. Now, suckered by me.

Franken passed the law I cited.   Once again you are a liar.   Once again you can't name anything Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain has ever accomplished.   Once again the Republicans stood up for rapists   It's so easy to make you look stupid because you are an extremely stupid and uninformed person kirk.  This is due to the fact you only get your news from fellow idiots Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

In the end, Franken won the debate. His amendment passed by a 68-30 vote, earning the support of 10 Republican senators including that of newly-minted Florida Sen. George LeMieux. “He did what a senator should do, which was he was working it,” LeMieux said in praise of Franken. “He was working for his amendment.”

Appearing with Franken after the vote, an elated Jones expressed her deep appreciation. “It means the world to me,” she said of the amendment’s passage. “It means that every tear shed to go public and repeat my story over and over again to make a difference for other women was worth it.”   See how the facts support my point exactly while revealing the things you say to be lies?

You are ignorant of the gay Republicans in the "Log Cabin Republican" group. Bigots, huh - the Democrats are full of child molesters, rapists, weiners, liar's Edwards, sexual harrassers (Clinton), Gay Teenage Prostituition (Barney Franks), prostitute using Gov Swizzlestick of CNN) and now the NBC reporter who is a predator himself. Obama: 9.1% unemployment, least experienced of anyone in the room he stands (even on Osama you seen a little boy). Grow up and take responsibility for all the dead civilians in Libya that FRANKEN & Klobuchar have allowed. JOBS JOBS JOBS but to Franken and & Klobuchar obama team, those jobs below to illegal aliens. F$ck them and the blood on their hands. Anyone voting for a democrat is a war criminal and murderer.

What about Senator Vitter who wore diapers in his office with hookers who spanked him, or the Congressman from NY who resigned after e-mailing his foto w/no shirt to a young lady, or the congressman who resigned after hitting on underaged interns, these are all Repubs. we got sleeze on both sides. Vitter got a standing ovation from his fellow Repubs. People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones...

"hard worker that makes smart laws"OK, Got any facts? What smart laws?

Still a "war monger" though right?Even though"Anti-War" was his #1 campaign pledge in 2008. Franken said; "he was astounded that Coleman still believes going to war in Iraq was a good idea.”And"Military action should be a last resort, used only when thereis no diplomatic solution, when there are clear and achievable objectives, and when the action has moral and political legitimacy."So what is the difference between Libya and Iraq?Anything to obtain power I guess...

That's two examples that you are a complete idiot.   Challenge for tiny brained kirk.  Please show one law Herman Cain or Michele Bachmann have introduced and passed that can be as universally applauded as the two laws we have cited.   If you cannot everyone will know Michelle and Herman have never done anything.   P.S. I know this is a trick at least for Herman since the only thing Herman Cain has ever done is sell shitty pizza and even shittier self help books.

Al Franken successfully introduced legislation that denies federal contracts to companies that have policies -- anywhere in the world -- that punish employees for complaining about rape or discrimination on the job. This is in response to a KBR/Halliburton employee in Iraq who was drugged and gang-raped by co-workers and denied justice or even medical treatment, then locked in a storage container for 24 hours and told that she'd lose her job if she left the country to get medical help. She was also prohibited from suing or seeking criminal justice because her Halliburton contract forbade seeking any justice apart from private arbitration.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) tried to block the amendment, saying that it was a "a political attack directed at Halliburton." Franken replied, "This amendment does not single out a single contractor. This amendment would defund any contractor that refuses to give a victim of rape their day in court."

Notice Al Franken is the on protecting victims of rape from having to go through such a horrible event as that poor woman.   Notice that the Republican is standing for rapists.

Smart law? That's easy. He introduced the amendment to the Health Care law (that has 70% approval rating now) that forces insurance companies to spend 85% of their income on peoples claims. That goes along with the 149 Repub. amendments that were also adopted. A plan that was adopted from the plan instituted by Romney in Massachusets & is wildly popular there.
