Target Field guard scolded lesbian Twins fans for kissing

The guard has been reprimanded, but still works at the stadium.
Taylor Campione and Kelsi Culpepper -- two lesbian women from Minneapolis -- were recently scolded by a Target Field security guard for what they call a "brief kiss."

After seeing the quick peck on the lips, the guard told the women that "we don't play grab ass here" and that they must "adhere to the 10 Commandments" while at the stadium.

"That ruined our entire evening," says Campione. "We were super upset, we felt super uncomfortable."

The security guard has since been reprimanded, but continues to work at the stadium, says Kevin Smith, a spokesman for the Twins.

"That behavior just is unacceptable," Smith says of the biblical put-down. "That security guard has received both a verbal and written reprimand that will be put in his personnel file, and he understands that that is not an acceptable behavior."

But that may not be enough. Campione and Culpepper are filing a complaint with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, accusing the security guard of discriminating against them for their sexual orientation.

"I want a zero-tolerance harassment policy instituted at Target Field," says Culpepper. "I think it's pretty pathetic that there isn't one everywhere already."

A Twins spokesman says this is an isolated incident, and won't change policy.
The confrontation occurred on May 27, during the Twins home game against the L.A. Angels.

Campione and Culpepper showed up to the game a little late. Culpepper stopped to use the restroom, giving Campione a quick kiss on the lips as she departed.

Immediately after, a middle-aged, mustached security guard in a Twins hat walked toward her, shaking his head.

"I saw you kissing that girl, you can't do that," the security guard said.

"I can kiss whoever I want to," Campione replied.

"Well, we don't play grab ass here," the guard answered.

When Culpepper came out of the bathroom, Campione told her what happened, and Culpepper decided to confront the security guard.

"I don't understand what's wrong with kissing my girlfriend," Culpepper told the man.

After some argument, the guard repeated his comment about not "playing grab ass."

"Then he said, 'Well here in the stadium, we adhere to the 10 Commandments,'" recalls Culpepper. "After that, I decided I was no longer going to speak with him, and I asked for his manager."

Target Field isn't releasing the name of the security guard, but Twins spokesman Smith says the guard has worked for the Twins for almost a decade, and has an otherwise "exemplary record."

I asked first, and homosexuals have admitted to me that they were homosexual desire. No, I'm not gay, I'm heterosexual, but do not parade around telling all who come into contact with knows I'm straight just because I like gay men tend to do. I can express my opinion all day 24 / 7 365 here in the U.S.. It's not my fault, that gay people are confused about their sexuality and need help to understand.Adult Board Game

Fire this arrogant self-righteous clown.

Just imagine a reverse scenario... a gay security guard reprimanding the "grab ass" behaviors of a "breeder" couple.  Just imagine the results of such an intrusion.

Hey, look over at what else they have at the Target Center - over on the right hand side - "Rihanna at Target Center".  I wonder if prancing about half naked singing all about sex counts as 'ok' with the security guard?

Those women did it to get the guard in trouble-and to further their cause-I request they be told to stop such action of getting people in trouble to further their cause. I think they knew better and just did it to cause trouble.

Although I agree this guy is a douchbag and I would rather not have him still have his job, he did recieve both a verbal and written warning, which is required in most states before you can fire someone. There are very few reasons that allow on the spot dissmissal. That's employment law and it's a good thing.

This guy let his personal views interfere with his job, and that was a mistake. However everyone deserves an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. If he does something like this again his employer can fire him on the spot because he followed the law and gave the guy a chance to change his behavior.

10 Commandments are 1. I am God, 2. No Other Gods, 3. Lords Name in Vain 4. Keep the Sabbath 5. Honor Parents 6. No Killing 7. No Adultery 8. No Stealing 9. No Lying 10 No Coveting...

Let me double check.....nope.  Nothing about Homosexuality, kissing your girlfriends or keeping Target field holy.... #BibleFail

"Well here in the stadium, we adhere to the 10 Commandments" WTF? I believe one of the commandments is about not stealing, right? Well Michael Cuddyer had 3 stolen bases the other night. I guess he's going to three times hell. Security guard is a clown and needs to be kissed hard by a scraggly-bearded man with bad breath!

So, where in the Ten Commandments does it say that two people can't kiss each other? Must have missed that part.

mijan126
mijan126

The Ten Commandments? REALLY? First of all, ignoring the fact that the stadium is not a church and people from all (or no) religions can watch games there... there's nothing about kissing or sexual orientation in the Ten Commandments. So even if the stadium DID adhere to the Ten Commandments, there would be no prohibition on women kissing women.

Second... and most ironically... there *IS* a commandment not to take the "Lord's Name" in vain. Seriously, who here has been to a major league ball game? How many times have you heard people swearing, "JESUZ CHRIST, IS THE UMP BLIND?!?" and "GOD DAMMIT" and so on? We've all heard plenty of that. But who gets cornered with a biblical lecture from a security guard for that?

So, it seems to me that 1) the security guard doesn't know the Ten Commandments well enough to be preaching them at people, 2) if he wants to preach, he should get out of the security guard business and become a preacher, and 3) I don't care how long the man has been working there -- FIRE HIM. Couples kiss at ball games all the time. Heck, I've seen marriage proposals at ballgames, and you can bet they weren't just sharing a "peck" kiss after the proposal. If hetero couples can kiss, so can any couples. If you don't like it, stop staring.

He needs to not be working for them any more.  OR he -- and probably all the security guards and staff -- need some sensitivity training.  That guard's attitude is nauseating.

People who say that _______ minority group are "too sensitive" when dealing with situations regarding DISCRIMINATION are people who have never and do not understand the impact discrimination has on a person who experiences it. And even if you don't experience it first hand, the fact it's happening at all should be enough to cause anger and frustration, and drive you to see change. We SHOULD be sensitive when it comes to discrimination. It's wrong, it's harmful, and it's disgusting. But people who don't care or support discrimination, won't see the seriousness of the issue. I couldn't imagine being so self-absorbed and lacking such awareness.

Francis

Stories like this are a reality check, too. This happened in Minneapolis. Even in Minneapolis, you can't kiss your partner in public, without some people causing harassment. It just speaks volumes to the type of country that LGBT people have to live in on an every day basis, and how brave LGBT people are to be open and out knowing the discrimination they face daily.

Francis

Don't see in the 10 commandments "thou shall not be a lesbian." or "thou shall not kiss their lesbian partner." Maybe that old guy, and other anti-gays, are reading a different Bible than everyone else.

I absolutely can't stand these types of security guards and just by the description of this guy, I already know this is the kind I deal with all the time.  Sorry to be just as stereotypical, but it just makes me want to scream when these (usually straight black male) security guards go on about 'Jeeeeezus this' and 'Lord Jeeeeezus that', saying that gay people are unnatural and are sick, yet these black guys are ALWAYS screwing anything female with blonde hair and produce so many out-of-wedlock kids with as many white women as possible. Father's Day is also known as Day of Confusion...yea...you get as many white chicks pregnant and walk off and that's okay, but two gay guys or girls are going to hell.  How about we gay people buy you a one-way ticket there and put you out of our misery!

Such hateful term. If it wasn't for the "breeder's" you would not collect social security when you get older. Oh I guess Obama the "breeder" has fu#kd that up too! Maybe in the future you will need to raise some kids who will pay into social security in order for you to collect. That will be a good rule change!

There is more to this story than meets the eye.  I work security for the Twins (I am not the guy who confronted the two women)  My son is gay, has a lifelong partner, an adopted baby, and I strongly support gay rights.  I will be voting no on the stupid ammendment.  Having said all that, here is the other side of the story:  fans complained to the security gaurd about the excessive kissing, fondling, etc. and were offended by it.  The security gaurd was referring to the Twins Fan Code Of Conduct and made the stupid mistake of referring to the "10 commandments" because he did not remember what the code was called.  If a man and a women were involved in excessive kissing and fondling to the point of people around them complaining, it is our job to ask them to stop or leave the stadium.  While I do not condone his choice of words, and admit he may be homophobic, I do not think that he responded to one "peck on the cheek" as is being presented by the two women involved.  Let's all learn from this and move on.  Vote no on the ammendment!!!
