Aaron Boogaard arrested for prescription fraud in connection with Derek's overdose death

​Aaron Boogaard, the 24-year-old brother of former Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard, turned himself in to police on Wednesday to face potential felony narcotics charges in connection with Derek's overdose death on May 13.

The date and time of Aaron's alleged crime are the same as when he found his brother's body in Derek's Warehouse District apartment in downtown Minneapolis, which indicates that the legal trouble stems from the overdose death.

Why it took so long for Aaron to be arrested is one of many questions that may be answered by noon Friday, the deadline to file charges for the Hennepin County Attorney's office.

In a candid interview, Derek admitted he had a lot of pain from his fights.

​In the days following Derek's death, it emerged that he had twice sought treatment for substance addiction. He was found unresponsive by his brothers Aaron and Ryan at 6 p.m. He was listed as dead on arrival. The coroner found that he had died from a mixture of alcohol and oxycodone.

Aaron Boogaard was a hockey player much in his brother's mold--a real tough guy. He was drafted 175th overall by the Wild in 2004 but never played for the team. In 2007 he signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but never made it past the club's developmental team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Now Aaron may be facing felony narcotics charges and the Boogaard family is confronted with a second tragedy:

Their father, Len Boogaard, said Thursday that Aaron occasionally hid his brother's stashes of Oxycontin, revealing their whereabouts only when pushed by Derek.

"We're just being victimized a second time," Len Boogaard said in a telephone interview Thursday. "We lost Derek, and Aaron Nicholas was the one that found Derek. So of course he's kicking himself. He was doing what he was doing because he was regulating what Derek was taking. He didn't want what actually has happened to Derek to happen."
