Al Franken slams Focus on the Family head for lie about gay families[VIDEO]

Franken knew Minnery was in trouble.
Al Franken made Focus on the Family's Tim Minnery look like a fool during this morning's hearing on the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. Not that Minnery needed much help.

Minnery had claimed that studies proved opposite-sex parents had healthier, happier kids who did better in school and were less likely to suffer emotional or sexual abuse.  During Minnery's testimony, Franken, holding up a few pieces of paper, said he'd followed the citation to a report from the Department of Health and Human Services.

"I," he said, pausing and shrugging for comedic effect, "checked the study out."

As the room broke into laughter, Franken stared down at Minnery, knowing that the next couple minutes were going to go badly for the gay marriage opponent.

It turns out, Minnery's group had wrongly taken the term "nuclear families" to mean opposite-sex couples.

Minnery was there to give "expert" testimony in opposition to the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal DOMA, the 1996 law that bans same sex marriage. By the time Franken was done with him, Minnery didn't seem like much of an expert.

"I frankly don't know how we can trust the rest of your testimony if you are reading studies these ways," Franken said.

So is Al a "top" or a "bottom"?

Here is a FACT directly from the CDC (Center of Disease Control)

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represent approximately 2% of the US population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV and are the only risk group in which new HIV infections have been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. In 2006, gay males accounted for more than half (53%) of all new HIV infections in the United States .

Perhaps aids will wipe the gay population out long before the "bigots" ever get a chance.

So don't fuck a gay man.  Your problem is solved.

I wonder which douchebag Republican was responsible for making sure lying idiot Tim Minnery got to sit there and lie to Congress about gay people.   Focus on the Family has a long tradition of lying about gay people and gay families.   Aren't they one of the groups the Southern Poverty Law Center declared a hate group?     For all you conservative idiots that whine about government waste here would be example #1.

Minnery's assumptions are the very definition of heterosexism.  Thank you, Al.

Since I'm going to guess you didn't read what you wrote, I'm going to agree with a few of the other commentators and note that Minnery was stating the "Nuclear Families" to mean OPPOSITE-sex (husband & wife) families where they both were the parents of all of the children. Of course, in the study, this is not the case. Your 2nd paragraph is entirely incorrect.

Yes, thank you everyone, I wrote too quickly and didn't check the phrase. Freudian slip, I suppose, that I would write same-sex couples count as "nuclear families." It's fixed, so hopefully we can forget about my error and focus on Minnery's.

So your excuse is that you are sloppy? You are not even using "Freudian slip" correctly. Sigh.

Too late Mullen.   Your liberal bias for making grammar errors has done been recorded.   The whole article is no dern good and therefore the liberals look bad!    The M. Night Shamalayan twist is Minnery is now innocent of all charges.   Foolish lamestream media reporter, when will you learn?

Al Franken impresses the hell out of me. I'm really proud of the work he's doing.

I don't know how we can trust the rest of City Pages if they are writing articles this way.  Editing is a good thing.

"It turns out, Minnery's group had wrongly taken the term "nuclear families" to mean same-sex couples."

oposite. Minnery's entire argument is that he presumed nuclear families (which had the positive characteristics) were families with a mother, father, and a child or children.

"I would think that the study, when it cites nuclear families, would mean a family headed by a man and a wife" - Minnery

Franken simply states "It doesn't"

Franken actually does site the studies own definition of a Nuclear Family correctly, and it says nothing about the sexual orientation or sex of the parents. Mr. Minnery would have known that had he actually read the study carefully enough to warrant his position or his consideration for testimony before an official panel, which was the point Franken is making.. But you two share the same trait in that you are only telling half-truth's to make your own points appear to have validity when in fact they do not.
